Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) is a multi-funded organization of the Business and Administrative Services division At UC Santa Cruz. CHES provides leadership in the areas of college student life and residential services, housing services and facilities, employee housing and capital planning, business and financial analysis, dining services, conference services, early education services, and the Bay Tree Bookstore and ID card services. Through these units, educational and developmental programs and services are offered to all members of the Campus community including students, faculty, staff, children and external constituents.
The Facilities unit of CHES provides comprehensive facilities support to over 9,500 student residents in ten colleges and six associated residential communities, as well as seven dining facilities. The mission of the Facilities unit is to plan for, develop and maintain a comfortable and safe physical environment for residents, and cost effectively maintain Housing and Dining facilities.
Under the general supervision of the Facility Trades and Projects Coordinator and direction of the Carpenter Specialist, the Carpenter executes Major Maintenance projects and skilled craft repair work in support of Colleges, Housing and Educational Services units. Together with the Carpentry Specialist, the Carpenter is responsible for a shop including necessary equipment, parts inventory, and procedures to comply with health and safety requirements. The Carpenter is responsible for ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and that the supply and parts inventory is adequately stocked and appropriately available.
Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV driving record upon hire.
Some special conditions include:
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
Must possess the ability to safely move equipment weighing 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
Ability to be certified to perform Class III Asbestos abatement.
Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
Ability to perform work overhead, to perform repetitive tasks, and to work from a stepladder and extension ladders.
Ability to work in mechanical rooms, attics, basement, and other noisy, confined, or disadvantaged areas.
Certification or ability to be certified in the fabrication and repair of DuPont Corian counter tops and bath surrounds.
Journey level experience in rough and/or finished carpentry.
Demonstrated ability, at the journey level, to plan and execute minor remodeling/refurbishment projects. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and documents. Ability to make working sketches or mockups as required. Ability to identify parts, materials, equipment and supplies needed to complete projects and estimate their cost and times of constructions or installation.
Knowledge of applicable building, health and safety codes, including Uniform Building Code (UBC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and American Disabilities Act (ADA).
Demonstrated ability to use adhesives and fabricate laminates for counter tops and etc.
Demonstrated skill in the safe use and maintenance of hand tools, power tools and ladders.
