Reporting to and under general supervision of the Interim Executive Director of Athletics, while taking lead work direction of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Athletic Trainer performs the full range of clinical athletic training functions for the student athletes of the 14 intercollegiate teams at Sonoma State University. The Athletic Trainer is responsible for administering a sports medicine program, working to prevent athletic injuries by evaluating a student athlete's physical condition and establishing a proper conditioning program. When injuries occur, the Athletic Trainer serves as the first responder by recognizing and evaluating the injuries, and subsequently developing treatment and rehabilitation programs, incorporating the appropriate therapeutic modalities and use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment. The Athletic Trainer also coordinate and liaison with physicians, students, athletes, coaching staff, parents, and other allied health professionals on the status of and treatment for injuries. Athletic Trainers also counsel students, athletes, and staff regarding proper conditioning, athletic training, and injury rehabilitation.
Major duties of this position include, but are not limited, to the following: Implement preventative and rehabilitation programs to treat athletic injuries using the appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments Consult with the Head Athletic Trainer on injuries and treatment plans and coordinate with the coaching staff Inform coaching staff and other health professional on the status of injuries and treatment plans Use a variety of therapeutic modalities in accordance with physician orders including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, sound, electricity and rehabilitation and exercise equipment, and apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries Advise students on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition Regularly evaluates the physical condition of student athletes Counsel student athletes and staff regarding conditioning, athletic training, and rehabilitation Assist in the designing of conditioning programs to prevent injuries Attend practice games and athletic events to provide medical emergency coverage to student athletes; travel with teams to away games as needed Maintain equipment and cleanliness of the athletic training room Maintain appropriate medical records of injuries, treatment plans, and progress including medical record keeping and summary reports Provide education and work direction to undergraduate student assistants Provide athletic training coverage for team sport practices and home intercollegiate contests
The incumbent will perform all other secondary duties as assigned by the Appropriate Administrator, including support sports camps, clinics, and other athletic events or occasionally drive of team vans during road trips.
Duties take place mostly in an office setting located at Sonoma State University. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, aligned with the regular campus hours. Some work schedule is non-conventional, as work time and date of intercollegiate athletic events. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule however must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. Your specific start time is determined by your Appropriate Administrator. Evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the Appropriate Administrator to meet operational needs. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator. The position may require occasional travel, by automobile and airplane, and the incumbent must be able to work some night and weekend hours with overnight stays.
Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study is required. Course work must include completion of The Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements and some course work in sport psychology is preferred. Any equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities for this position is also considered meeting the minimum qualification of this position. Some previous experience providing athletic training at the high school or college level as an intern or certified Athletic Trainer is preferred. Must possess and maintain BOC certification and in CPR/ AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid. Valid California driver's license required.
Must possess a general knowledge of the principles and practices of Athletic Training including conditioning and injury prevention, as well as injury assessment and rehabilitation; the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses' governing national collegiate athletic association pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standard for handling Blood Born Pathogens; maintaining medical record, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards, and following insurance procedures.
Must be able to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities, treatments, rehabilitation, and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance, and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities.
Requires knowledge of care, evaluation, and prevention of athletic injuries and strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Must possess the ability to interpret and apply program rules; gather an analyze information related to injuries as appropriate and develop, in coordination with the Head Athletic Trainer, appropriate rehabilitation programs; utilize strong interpersonal skills to interact with athletes, coaches, parents, and others health professionals, especially in sensitive situations; present clear and concise information orally and in writing; and provide work direction to student assistants.
Intermediate proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) required. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents. Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations.
