Job Summary This position will work closely with researchers in the Molecular Instruments resource (molecularinstruments.org) within the Beckman Institute and Pierce Lab at Caltech to support programmable molecular technologies for quantitative profiling of DNA, RNA, and proteins within intact biological specimens.
Job Duties Job duties will focus on synthesizing custom kits within the Molecular Instruments resource and supporting the use of programmable molecular technologies (e.g., in situ hybridization chain reaction [HCR]) by researchers at Caltech and elsewhere.
Duties will include: - Synthesize, label, purify, and quantify oligonucleotides. Manipulate oligonucleotides with enzymes. Prepare buffers. - Optimize protocols and practices for efficient kit synthesis and quality control. - Maintain equipment and lab supplies. - Perform wet bench experiments (e.g., gel electrophoresis, in situ hybridization, molecular cloning, bacterial and mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy). - Correspond with researchers in other laboratories by email. - Participate in research presentations and discussions. - May receive co-authorship or acknowledgement depending on level of involvement. - May monitor the work of other support personnel and/or coordinate laboratory safety training and procedures to ensure operational integrity and/or compliance. - Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree and at least two years of wet lab experience. - A successful applicant must be dedicated, responsible, detail-oriented, well-organized, efficient and capable of working closely with graduate students, postdocs, and research scientists. - Applicant must keep an accurate, detailed and neat lab notebook. Attention to detail in constructing grammatically correct emails is essential. - The following wet lab skills are required: polyacrylamide/agarose gel electrophoresis and general molecular biology experience including the use of protein enzymes to manipulate nucleic acids.
Preferred Qualifications The following wet lab skills are preferred but not required: - Bacterial and mammalian cell culture, in situ hybridization, oligonucleotide synthesis and labeling, PAGE and HPLC purification, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and Northern/Western blots. - Previous research experience, general technical dexterity, dedication, organization, and scientific curiosity are strongly valued.
