Stanfords School of Engineering seeks a Budget Analyst to join our team of four finance professionals in the Deans Office. The Budget Analyst will report to the Schools Finance Officer and work on a full range of non-sponsored financial activities that play a large role in determining key school-wide decisions. This position allows a person the opportunity to learn and fully develop an expertise in the area of financial operations and budgeting in an academic environment. This position also represents an opportunity to be part of a high-level, operational environment and partner with the local unit level to achieve the goals of the school. Perform complex finance functions and/or activities requiring advanced knowledge and application of internal policies, external regulations, precedents and systems. May manage a key area within a finance operation or department/unit.
Work with SoE Departments, Programs, Centers & Institutes on consolidated budgeting within Tidemark, the Universitys budget system;
Construct and assemble data for Schools consolidated budget, totaling $400M; create forecasts, projections, and variance analysis to support decision making; develop conclusions and present high-level summary of recommendations;
Manage and present to Dean the summary of Schools Funds and Commitments which includes detailed analysis of income, commitments, and actual expense, and provides critical information necessary for decision making, budgeting and long-range forecasting;
Aid in creation of multi-year forecast to support building different scenarios for strategic planning;
Design and perform ad hoc analysis for School, Departments, Programs, Centers & Institutes; develop reports to meet management needs which require ability to search and extract large data sets from several sources;
Provide financial management support to 9 Departments and 6 Programs, Centers & Institutes that report into the School and serve as consultant for units during fiscal year-end close process;
Review financial transactions for appropriateness and provide approval in accordance with SoE best practices, University policy and guidelines, accounting principles, audit requirements and recommend, when needed, financial procedures for better controls and workflow efficiencies;
Participate in School financial transaction reviews, audit checks and execute control programs established;
Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas; apply ingenuity and creativity to problem analysis and resolution, and recognize exceptions. Participate in developing solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational perspective in decision making;
Participate in training all new Department, Program, Center & Institute managers and financial officers on all financial matters;
Participate as a key member of a team; support new initiatives; cooperate and adapt to changes and processes; make decisions and determine approach to managing and completing processes;
Work on special projects as assigned; represent the School, Departments, Programs, Centers & Institutes at University-level meetings, task groups, pilots, and provide advice on behalf of the School when necessary.

Education & Experience:
Bachelors degree plus four years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite; especially Excel.
Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
Understanding of and ability to apply accounting skills and concepts.
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.
Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead part of a multi-functional team.

Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
