The Department of Plastic Surgery Nurse Practitioner position will be an advanced practice nurse that provides independent nursing and collaborative medical management to Plastic Surgery at the UCI Medical Center. The Nurse Practitioner provides routine care and management of the patient with acute and chronic complaints. Incumbent is accountable for the management and coordination of all patient care for the Department of Plastic Surgery service. The Nurse Practitioner will assistant in complex Plastic Surgery procedures and other medical procedures under the supervision of the Plastic Surgeon. The incumbent will assist surgeons in patient care before, after and during surgery. The Nurse Practitioner will be managed by Faculty in Plastic Surgery. This position will provide secondary, and in some cases tertiary care within the scope of practice, licensure and organizational policies. The Nurse Practitioners role is diverse, involving close relationships with the surgeon and patient. This position will primarily provide ambulatory clinical services, including taking histories, conducting physical examinations, laser, botox injections, fillers, ordering, performing and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests and therapies and furnishing drugs and devices in a cost efficient manner for specific conditions. Emphasis is placed on health promotion, disease prevention and patient education, combining the qualities of both nursing and medicine. The Nurse Practitioner acts as a health care resource and role model to staff by maintaining a high degree of ethics and integrity. Although this is primarily an ambulatory position, the NP may on occasion assist the surgeon in the operating room, Duties include triaging phone calls, reviewing critical labs, follow-up of biopsy results with patient and medical staff, conducting in-depth interviews with patients and/or family, constructing comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and periodic physical examinations, and exploring patients interpretation of health needs.
