Job Summary Reporting to the Senior Director for Facilities Management, the Manager of the Architectural and Structural Trades provides leadership and direction to three supervisors and approximately thirty skilled and semi-skilled non-exempt employees. The manager is responsible for the Carpenter, the Paint, and the Lock and Key shops. The manager is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for asset management and benchmarking best practices that support and enable Caltech's research mission. The manager establishes and maintains an effective communication strategy between with employees and customers.
Job Duties - Develops the strategic asset management plan for the building envelop, interior features and finishes - Develops and implements a program for periodic building inspections. Initiates and schedules corrective work based on shortcomings identified by inspections - Monitors workload, backlog, and scheduling with subordinate supervisors to assure essential work is completed - Establishes appropriate balance and priorities of repair needs, renovation project requirements, and other work priorities. Makes staffing adjustments through available staff or use outside contractors and agencies - Establishes goals and metrics for measuring strategies and manage performance of the shop operations - Hires, terminates, disciplines, and manages performance of staff - Possesses knowledge of OSHA regulations, building codes, construction standards, environmental requirements, etc. - Sets the climate for professional growth and development. Organizes and plans the training of all skilled and support personnel - Employs the integrated work management system to control work, capture costs as provide decision support - Develops and maintains portions of the Caltech Emergency Management Plan, working closely with Environmental Health and Safety. Supervise the building disaster recovery teams in event of a catastrophic event - Performs other duties as required
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in engineering or business management or similar, and minimum five years' experience at the management/supervisor level in a facilities maintenance environment - Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to effectively manage and motivate the maintenance staff - Strong interpersonal relations and customer service skills, excellent oral and written communication skills - Requires a background investigation prior to an offer of employment
Preferred Qualifications - Project management experience a plus - Certification as an educational facilities professional is a plus
