Job Summary As Campus Inspector and Deputy Fire Marshal for the California Institute of Technology this position reports to the Senior Director of Design and Construction. This position provides inspections for compliance with all applicable building, fire life/safety and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. This work requires field verification and plan review of both construction projects and event plans. This position is the primary liaison with the Pasadena Fire Department and is required to coordinate all campus inspections required by the Fire Code and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. The Campus Inspector and Deputy Fire Marshal works directly with many Caltech departments including Design and Construction, Facilities Management, EH&S, Faculty Housing, Student Housing, the Athenaeum and others.
This position requires a highly motivated self-starter with excellent communication and organizational skills and must possess the skills to work effectively with the Caltech's faculty, staff and students.
Job Duties - Review building plans and specifications for all campus capital construction and renovation projects to assure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and building statutes and regulations - Act as sole campus liaison and coordinate with Pasadena Fire Department to ensure compliance with Title 19 of the California Code of Regulations - Assist in the coordination of all required event permits as required by Title 19 - Title 24 - Act as the single point of contact to the PFD Event Fire Marshal - Assist in the Pasadena city plan check process with regard to building and fire code compliance - Provide analysis and work toward solutions with regard to improving overall campus ADA compliance - Provide regular input for improvements to the Caltech design guide, guide specifications, and contract specifications - Develop, implement and maintain inspection procedures to insure that the quality of construction projects delivered meets or exceeds the requirements of the California Building Code - Establish and maintain an effective communication strategy developing and coordinating effective interrelationships with project managers, engineers, PFD Fire Marshals, contract administrators, city building inspectors, general contractors and architects - Perform other duties as required
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management - Minimum of ten years of construction inspection experience with appropriate California Building Codes by the International Code Council (ICC) or Division of State Architect (DSA) certification - Excellent knowledge of construction policies and procedures - Excellent knowledge of means and methods by which projects are constructed
