The San Diego County Water Authority is an independent public agency that serves as San Diego County's regional water wholesaler. The Engineering Department is responsible for the design and construction of new regional water facilities in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP); rehabilitating or replacing facilities identified as part of the Asset Management Program; identifying and employing value engineering of design concepts to optimize facility and aqueduct system performance; managing major emergency facility repairs; and providing overall CIP programmatic monitoring and controls. It also manages the Water Authority's real-estate interests by managing the acquisition, disposal, and lease of real property; patrolling and managing 168 miles of right of way; and providing survey services. In addition, the department provides technical support to other agencies, departments, and member agencies.
Engineering Technician I is the entry-level class in the sub professional engineering series. Initially under direct supervision, incumbents develop knowledge of Authority facilities, design and construction methods, engineering records/files and both manual and computer-aided graphics, mapping and drafting/design procedures.
The candidate for the Engineering Technician I position will perform design drafter work in support of capital improvement projects. Specific work may include reviewing technical drawings, performing manual and computer-aided drafting, developing civil and mechanical engineering design drawings, and incorporating record changes to existing drawings. Depending on the candidate's qualifications and abilities for this position, duties may include but will not be limited to the following: Provides support for professional and technical engineering staff; assists in the preliminary design and preparation of engineering and right-of-way plans, sketches, layouts, graphic displays, exhibits, maps and plans for water conveyance facilities.
Reviews water facilities plans and specifications for conformance with Authority standards.
Provides administrative support for the assembly, printing and distribution of contract documents pertaining to engineering design and facility construction projects, in accordance with the Authority's procedures manual.
Drafts maps, charts, diagrams and engineering tables using manual or computer-aided drafting techniques; performs routine calculations of water generation, hydraulics and other computations; checks slopes and elevations for conformance with Authority requirements; revises construction drawings and record drawings as directed.
Prepares manual and computer-aided graphic designs, maps and illustrations, including displays and slides.
Performs field inspection of Authority planning, design and construction projects for capital improvements and repair/replacement of existing facilities.

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in civil engineering, drafting, surveying, construction management, engineering mathematics or related fields.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATES / SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Some positions may require a valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
