Under the general supervision of the Facilities Projects Supervisor, the Carpenter performs a full range of skilled journey-level carpentry and related work. Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. Maintains a safe and clean work environment. Maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems. Provides instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semiskilled assistants. Installs, builds and repairs internal and external structures including dry wall, ceiling and floor tiles, roofs, cabinets, counters, shelves, partitions, floors, etc. Advises in the selection and storage of building materials. Inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building safety codes and regulations. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications: A combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrating the achievement of journey level skills equivalent to those acquired through the completion of a carpenters apprenticeship program.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in both rough and finished carpentry. Thorough knowledge of the various types and grades of lumber, as well as hand and power carpentry tools. Thorough knowledge of applicable state safety codes and regulations pertaining to the carpentry trade, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety for the State of California and California State Building Codes.
Ability to build, install, and repair structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings and cabinetry. Ability to operate and maintain hand and power carpentry tools. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications. Ability to recognize and select appropriate lumber types and grades, make rough sketches, and estimate the cost, time, and materials of carpentry projects. Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems. Ability to prepare standard reports, provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants, and analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations required for the position.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Special Working Conditions: Works on uneven surfaces, in and around construction sites, and on roofs and other elevated surfaces. Works with hazard containing materials, such as asbestos and lead. Schedule will vary according to department needs. Occasional early morning, evening and/or weekend hours. May be required to work overtime or an alternate schedule in order to complete assignments. Will carry master keys.
