Sixth College Culture, Art and Technology Program Lecturer Recruitment (AY 2016-17)
Sixth College's Culture, Art and Technology Program at the University of California, San Diego is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications from candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment.The Culture, Art and Technology Program is part of UCSD's Sixth College Academic Programs. It encompasses the lower-division core sequence of freshman writing classes, an upper-division writing course, and the college's experiential learning requirement or Practicum. The lower- division sequence is required for all first-year students and is an interdisciplinary exploration of how aspects of human culture shape and mediate our interactions with our environment and with each other. Entering students will enroll in CAT 1, 2, and 3 in the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters (respectively) of their first year. The upper-division writing requirement, CAT 125, is a class in public rhetoric and practical communication that prepares students for success beyond UCSD by developing their proficiency in public presentation. The Practicum is an upper-division general education requirement unique to Sixth College; students complete a course that has an experiential, service-learning, or community-based component to its curriculum.
The major learning objectives for students throughout the writing sequence are:
CAT 1: summarize academic arguments; use writing and reading for inquiry, learning, thinking, and communicating; identify and explicate a text's purpose and argument; read and write in several genres
CAT 2: identify and understand arguments, both explicit and implicit; understand how different kinds of arguments are constructed, how visual arguments persuade, and why some parts of an argument might not be visible or open to debate; develop an ability to read, understand, and critique arguments and assumptions in texts in diverse genres including, when appropriate, multi-media texts; establish a controlling idea and support it effectively and fairly; identify and respond effectively to plausible counterarguments to one's own positions.
CAT 3: develop an ability to read, understand, and critique arguments and assumptions in texts in diverse genres including, when appropriate, multi-media texts; identify the value and differences pf potential resources in a variety of formats (e.g. multimedia, database, website, data set, audio/visual, book); understand the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes; write in several genres such as summaries or annotated bibliographies, thesis-driven essays, and original academic research
CAT 125: develop increased experience and proficiency in public presentation, documentation, and curation; direct written, spoken, or digital compositions to multiple audiences; examine their own authority as writers and understand how different genres and citation conventions are appropriate for establishing credibility in different contexts; compose written work that supports and extends their own experiential learning
Ph.D., M.F.A., Ed.D, or other terminal degree in a pertinent field
Solid teaching experience
Demonstrated strong leadership or commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting
Previous teaching experience in the CAT Program highly preferred but not required. Select candidates will be invited for an interview and to give a brief 30 minute presentation that (a) delivers a sample lecture on a topic of their choosing for a possible future CAT course of their own design and (b) discusses how their proposed assignment and course fulfill the learning objectives set forth by the program.
