As a national collegiate leader, the University Health Services' Tang Center provides comprehensive medical, mental health, insurance and health promotion services to all UC Berkeley students, and a variety of health programs for faculty and staff. Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. Coupled with health promotion and public health programs, UHS reaches all segments of the Berkeley campus community.
Tang Center's International Travel Clinic guides members of the campus community in protecting their health while traveling throughout the world. Services include allergy shots, travel consultations and immunizations for travel abroad.
UHS provides service to students Monday-Friday from 8:00AM to 7:00PM and on weekends during the academic school year (closed for weekends during summer). The Tang Center is closed on holidays. Learn more at uhs.berkeley.edu
I. PATIENT CARE AND TRIAGE Using the nursing process develops, interprets, implements, evaluates and documents a plan of care for patients consistent with UHS policies, procedures and guidelines. Patient care may be provided in person, by telephone, and by electronic means.
A. Employ triage techniques to identify existing or potential health problems (physiological and psychological) and formulate a plan of care. 1. Establish a priority of care for patients and route patients appropriately. Demonstrates confidentiality, sensitivity and concern during all patient interactions. 2. Recognize symptoms and diagnostic test results that deviate from normal. Follows through on abnormal findings in a timely manner, using appropriate resources. 3. Consults appropriately with MD/NP or supervisor. 4. Documents nursing assessments and interventions clearly, legibly, accurately, concisely, and consistently in accordance with UHS policy. 5. Provides appropriate patient teaching, health education and related counseling.
B. Provides direct patient care utilizing nursing skills and protocols. 1. Initiates diagnostic tests as appropriate and according to applicable protocol. 2. Administers medications and treatments. 3. Assists in the preparation and treatment of patients. 4. Takes medical histories, examines, assesses and counsels patients on basic health problems according to protocol, e.g. URI, allergy testing, pregnancy testing, etc. 5. Provides case management, maintains tickler file(s) systems to assure continuity of care.
C. Urgent Care, Allergy/Travel, Specialty Nurses must meet the specific focus Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of their units as outlined in attachments. The Clinical Nurse II job description includes the Clinic Advice Nurse Focus
II. ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Demonstrates a positive, constructive attitude that facilitates achieving UHS goals and objectives.

III. LEADERSHIP/PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
A. As a nursing professional demonstrates an ability to communicate knowledge both formally and informally. 1. Anticipates educational needs of patients. a. Provides written resource materials. b. Documents instruction and patients' response to same. 2. Collaborates with other disciplines in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating patient education materials. 3. Participates in the orientation of new employees; may act as a preceptor providing instruction and guidance in a positive manner.
B. Contributes to the improvement of nursing practice. 1. Demonstrates and supports professionalism in nursing practice. 2. Takes responsibility for own educational needs. 3. 3 or more years of experience in clinical nursing (BS or higher preferred).
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide routine immunizations, travel immunizations and travel counseling based on a review of the health history and knowledge of current CDC and Shoreland recommendations, following established protocols.
Current California RN License
Ability to work independently.
Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
Ability to work under pressure calmly and efficiently, coping with variable work loads, intermittent delays and emotionally charged situations.
Knowledge of Student Health Insurance Plan.
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide antigen administration and counseling.
Knowledge, skill and ability to perform allergy skin testing and interpret results.
Knowledge, skill and ability to perform tuberculin testing and interpret results.
Knowledge, skill and ability to implement and modify a patient regimen for antigen therapy upon direction of the Allergy Specialist.
Consults resources as appropriate (e.g. allergist, travel consultant, other).
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide appropriate emergency interventions.
Ability to anticipate patient flow problems or scheduling conflicts and intervene effectively.
Ability to anticipate vaccine/supply needs and order as needed to meet sufficient supplies to meet patient needs.
Ability to work effectively with others to improve clinic efficiency and effectiveness.
