The R & D Engineer role involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation.
This position also includes attendance of meetings with international partners, creation and review of figures and slideshows, writing quarterly/annual reports to funders, oversight and coordination of technical narrative sections of large complex proposals, and tracking budget expenditure rates.
The R & D Engineer follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Applies electrochemical and water chemistry knowledge for technology optimization and research activities related to the removal of Arsenic from groundwater. Performs detailed analysis and testing through various techniques, including ICP-OES equipment to understand absorption competition with co-occuring ions common in groundwater.
55% Designs, prepares and runs new experiments examining the effect of co-occurring ions on the removal of arsenic from water. Participates in operational and engineering problem solving with field engineers in India.
25% Under general supervision, participates in engineering and mathematical analysis and testing of experimental data collected in the lab at UCB, as well as the pilot plant in India. Develops performance specifications to determine the success of the testing and experiments on the project.
10% Coordinates and writes technical narrative sections of large complex proposals.
10% Works with ERSO resource analyst and PI for tracking funding and assisting with purchases and reimbursements.
University level experience as a Research and Development Engineer.
Working knowledge of electrochemistry principles and methods in order to independently perform professional design work of limited scope and complexity.
First hand knowledge of field research in developing countries.
High level experience with error analysis of experimental data.
Outstanding organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Demonstrated excellence in writing and collaborating on proposals with international partners.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
Outstanding interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
Proficient in online collaborative formats such as Evernote, Trello, Google Drive.
Bachelors degree in an engineering field or physical science field.
