The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to invite applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions to strengthen or bridge existing research and teaching thrusts and to bring new expertise in emerging topics. The Department is entering a period of sustained, long-term, strategic growth to develop expertise and leadership in the broad areas of Infrastructure Risk Mitigation, Sustainable Urban Systems, and Water Security. We invite applications in any related discipline, although our most significant needs in the early stages of this process are as follows:
(a) Integrated water/wastewater/water treatment technologies, particularly for contaminants of emerging concern in direct/indirect potable reuse; (b) Materials for energy, construction, and transportation infrastructure with focus on material discovery and design and/or, degradation prevention. Also of interest are competencies that would enable gigaton-scale CO2 utilization by advances in catalysis, and CO2 mineralization; (c) Geotechnical engineering and related fields, specifically as applied to hazard characterization and resilience of urban systems and critical infrastructure; (d) Transportation systems, emphasizing the challenges associated with increased urbanization, mass transit, and transition towards autonomous vehicles in a dense urban environment.
Applications for appointments at any level will be considered (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor), with preference given to early-career applicants. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in engineering, or a closely related discipline and should be active researchers with promise in developing and maintaining an extramurally supported research program, publishing and disseminating research findings, and serving as leaders at the forefront of their thematic area. As part of their educational responsibilities, the candidate is expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and teach lecture and/or laboratory courses. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to lead and/or participate in major interdisciplinary research projects. We maintain strong collaboration with other Engineering departments including Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Bioengineering, and campus units, such as the California NanoSystems Institute, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences, Institute of Transportation Studies, and the Dental and Medical Schools.
