As an assistant to the Senior Manager of Project Planning the Project Engineer will utilize the latest technologies to assist in creating reports with regards to schedules, budgets and general project management. Projects may include housing, dining, retail, office, and other tenant improvement projects within the over 5 million square feet of Housing Dining Hospitality (HDH) facilities.
Collaborates with each team member of the HDH Project Planning group, the maintenance supervisors in the HDH Property Operations and Planning division and other HDH division staff to assist in various project needs. Fosters an ongoing positive interaction with both the HDH management team and various internal and external entities to ensure that customers' needs and expectations are met and exceeded.
The Project Engineer will provide support services to multiple simple and complex HDH construction and renovation projects. This involves such tasks as supporting multiple projects, providing short and long term analysis, projections and solutions, and working with a variety of general and specialty contractors in the successful execution of projects. Ensures project schedules are accurate and precise and that projects are delivered as specified, within budget and within defined timelines.
In support of the HDH program at UC San Diego, incumbent will assist and facilitate HDH renovation projects performed annually through the entire project life cycle including budget development, design development, project implementation, project completion and facility opening.
With regular guidance, also manages small and capital design and construction projects. Oversees and ensures that all training and close-out documents meet the contract requirements and are properly turned over to the appropriate entity. Manages project reviews for conformance to regulatory requirements and organization policies. Takes initiative to make recommendations to modify construction and design contracts to incorporate needs of the project close-out and training.
Housing Dining Hospitality (HDH) is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 7 divisions, with more than 650 staff employees, 800-1000 student employees and an annual operating budget of $150 million. HDH provides housing for approximately 15,000 undergraduates, grad students, faculty, staff and their families in over 400 buildings and approximately 5.3 million sq. ft. Currently, HDH houses 38% of UCSD's enrolled students with a goal of housing 50% in the near future. HDH also provides maintenance and repair, contract meals/meal plan management, as well as retail food service, conference services and catering services to student residents, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.
A Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills to develop project scope and drawings. Hands on experience and knowledge of project administration and project cost control/management. Proven ability to illustrate, read, and interpret drawings, diagrams, blueprints and construction documents.
Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and project management software. Knowledge of software such as MS Office applications, MS Project, Excel, Outlook, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and AutoCAD, Photoshop, Revit Architecture, Sketch-Up, Adobe Suite, Prolog, Primavera, Centric Projects, Timberline and/or other related software.
Knowledge of building and construction, design, construction contract administration and California Building Codes. Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, general maintenance, construction and repair procedures.
Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including effective negotiation skills.
Proven ability to work effectively with faculty and students as well as the proven ability to work with a wide variety of people including senior administrators, diverse staff and external professionals and consultants.
