The Facilities Management and Development (FM&D) department is a unit within the Administration and Finance Division. FM&D is responsible for the physical and environmental campus maintenance of buildings, roads, parking lots, lighting, utility transports, sidewalks, waterways and landscaping. Environmental Health & Safety provides the administrative, managerial and technical services for environmental and occupational safety and health compliance activities for the University.
Under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the Fire and Life Safety Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing a campus-wide fire and life safety program. Key accountabilities include developing and implementing systems and programs to protect the campus for fire hazards and ensure compliance with applicable sections of the California Code of Regulations and the California State Fire Marshal (CSFM). Responsible for understanding and representing Cal Poly's mission, vision and values to all internal and external stakeholders, the incumbent engages clients in appropriate communications that manages expectations and builds collaborative relationships.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Four years of technical or administrative experience. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Comprehensive knowledge of California laws, codes, and regulations relative to fire and life safety.
Demonstrated experience performing inspections, special investigations, and evaluating premises for compliance with codes and regulations pertaining to fire protection, hazardous materials and life safety.
Ability to conduct on-site occupancy, use, and fire prevention inspections of new construction and tenant improvement projects and existing occupancies.
Demonstrated ability to determine requirements and review fire sprinkler system plans and fire protection equipment systems.
Ability to certify the installation and testing of specialized fire retarding systems that include, but are not limited to, fire service mains, sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire alarm systems, and commercial kitchen suppression systems.
Skills in research, development and evaluation of policies and programs. Demonstrated skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications.
Demonstrated ability to train individuals, with the ability to write clear, concise, and effective training materials, safety procedures and reports.
Ability to work with representatives from public and private entities using tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems. Demonstrated consultative skills in working with internal and external constituent groups.
Ability to understand, anticipate and address problems from a broad, interactive perspective and discern applicable underlying principles to conceive of and develop strategic solutions.
Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written or presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including Microsoft Office and on-line data management systems.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn campus infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Five years of professional experience in managing fire and life safety system for a multi-building and multi-occupancy type employer site.
Possession of a California State Fire Marshal Certification.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a current fire and life safety system technologies and a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
