Under general supervision, the incumbent will work as the Research Project Manager in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and in conjunction with the group's research associates, making innovative contributions pertaining to lab and/or research procedures aimed at understanding developmental patterning using Drosophilia as a model to understand human disease processes.
Major responsibilities include: act as work lead for the Postdocs, researchers, and staff, overseeing and conducting experiments utilizing Active Genetics CRISPR/Cas9 technology through routine biochemistry and molecular biology procedures such as DNA isolation, recombination-based cDNA cloning, bacterial transformation and growth, PCR, Gibson assembly, constructing Copycat elements,and trans-complementing MCRs and ERACRs.
In addition, when appropriate, the incumbent will assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed and participate in laboratory meetings and journal discussions.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule and overtime that may include occasional evenings and weekends as required by experiments.
Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques. PhD Degree in related field preferred.
Extensive experience with sectioning, processing, and analyzing histological samples by confocal microscopy.
Extensive independent experimental experience using Drosophila as a research model.
Proven experience in experimental design and analysis, with limited input from the PI working with molecular biology and protein techniques such as DNA cloning and Restriction cloning, bacterial transformation, protein gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting.
Demonstrated expertise in the preparation of scientific reagents including common buffers and stock solutions.
Demonstrated experience using CRIPSR/Cas9 technology, specifically in the context of Dropsophila Genome and Active Genetics.
Extensive knowledge of microdissection and staining of tissue samples, particularly with Drosophilia Tissue, including fluorescent and colorimetric immunostaining.
Extensive experimental experience with the Gibson assembly of complex vectors (CopyCats, transcomplementing MCRs and ERACRs).
Strong knowledge and experience with basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, micro-pipettes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and microscopes
Strong demonstrated skill in maintaining multiple fly stocks of different species.
Demonstrated ability to contribution to the preparation and editing of scientific papers, manuscripts, and lab data. Experience presenting research to formal audience.
Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and associated word processing and spreadsheet software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Proven skill and knowledge to proactively maintain an organized lab and stocks of essential supplies and media, purchase new equipment, and ensure lab equipment is operating effectively.
Proven skill to train others in various lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage. laboratory maintenance, etc.).
Demonstrated ability to hire academics, staff and students and direct/oversee their work in the lab.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements including ability to discuss and understand day-to-day laboratory affairs, research plans, results and ideas with PI and other lab personnel in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.
Excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, follow written and oral protocols and give oral presentations on the progress of research in lab meetings. Ability to prioritize and schedule experiments and duties to maximize efficiency.
