Ecology and Evolutionary Biology: On-going Diving Field Technician Pool (Ongoing)

The Raimondi-Carr Lab at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Diving Field Technician in marine ecology, under the direction of Dr. Mark Carr. Successful candidates will also participate in a large scale ecological monitoring program of kelp forest along the west coast along the west coast.This position will be involved in field and lab studies of various aspects (ecological and oceanographic) of kelp forest ecosystems along the central and north central coasts of California, using SCUBA. General responsibilities include: Coordinate and manage staff and resources for on-going research projects; plan and organize logistics for local and remote field missions; independently design, modify, refine sampling design and protocols as needed; collect and perform quality control and basic analysis of data as well as organize and modify database; operate and maintain small boats and vehicles; and supervise and train technical field assistants.
The position requires travelling and working at remote field sites for prolonged periods (1-2 weeks) along the west coast of North America and may require occasionally working for extended periods. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Additionally, the selected candidate must be physically capable of carrying 75 lbs. of field equipment to and from field sites with or without accommodations.
RANK: Junior Specialist
SALARY: Minimum annual salary of $37,548 (pro-rated based on percent time), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: ? Bachelor degree or equivalent foreign degree in Marine Biology or related field ? Demonstrated experience in field research (a minimum of one year) in kelp forest ecosystems along the coast of California ? Demonstrated experience organizing people and resources for field missions including skill in scheduling, ordering, and task coordinating ? Documented experience operating small (15-25') vessels in coastal waters of central California ? Documented record in using Windows, Microsoft Office, and other data-analysis programs ? Demonstrated experience overseeing and directing the work of others ? Must have active AAUS Scientific Diving Certification at time of application
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: ? Knowledge of central California kelp forest ecosystems, including identification of fishes, invertebrates and algae ? Scientific diving skills and experience in underwater sampling protocols (band transects, point contact) ? Motorboat Operator Training Course (MOTC) certification and checked out on UCSC vessels ? Preparation and maintenance of oceanographic instrumentation ? Demonstrated experience in mechanical and construction skills ? Experience supervising diving research expeditions at remote field sites ? Experience in development and maintenance of databases
POSITION AVAILABLE: As openings occur, appointments contingent upon availability of funding.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Short term, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%. Initial appointments average three months to six months in duration, with the possibility of extension or rehire for additional seasonal appointments.
