The mission of Stanford's Department of Bioengineering is to create a fusion of engineering and the life sciences that promote scientific discovery and the development of new biomedical technologies and therapies through research and education. The Department of Bioengineering is jointly supported by the Schools of Medicine and Engineering. It includes, in a single department, research and teaching programs that embrace biology as a new engineering paradigm and apply engineering principles to medical problems and biological systems.
Department of Bioengineering is seeking to hire a Life Science Research Associate in the Lab of Dr. Markus Covert. Successful candidate must be well organized and able to conduct experiments, which involve time-lapse fluorescent microscopy, large-scale gene expression analysis, molecular cloning, and other molecular assays on primary mammalian and microbial cells. The LRSP will also be responsible for training and orienting all incoming members of the lab, as well as taking care of lab supply purchasing and interfacing with vendors. The LRSP will maintain cultured cells, prepare assay reagents and samples, create novel plasmid constructs, and perform molecular assays, which will require working knowledge of mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology. The position will also require some ordering and maintenance of standard lab equipment and supplies. The LRSP will work under general guidance from the Principal Investigator, and will also work closely with other researchers in a team setting. The LRSP must be accurate, efficient, organized, keep detailed records, have excellent communication skills, and must have the ability to recognize irregularities in experimental results and modify experiments as needed.
The Covert Lab works at the forefront of systems biology research, and is best known for construction of the first whole-cell computer model that explicitly takes all of the known information about each gene and molecule into account to predict cell behaviors - which was called an ultimate goal of biology, and a grand challenge for the 21st century. Now, with a major new award from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, our group is building a top-flight team to develop and advance this research in order to have the largest possible impact on the world.
Perform more complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct a portion of the research project(s).
Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments for a major portion of the research project. Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist. Based on prior results, contribute to development of new research protocols and procedures or adaptation of existing protocols.
Make recommendations on plan design and/or research direction to principal investigator.
Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; present findings for lab work group.
Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May contribute to publication of findings and present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as technical resource for other research staff.
Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and three years of related experience, or Masters degree, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.

Certifications and Licenses:
Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
