Under general direction, the Deputy Fire Marshal assists the Campus Fire Marshal in the management of fire prevention and public education programs. The Deputy Fire Marshal oversees the Title 19 inspection program, performing comprehensive fire code compliance inspections of all campus buildings on an annual basis and monitoring necessary follow-up activities. The Deputy Fire Marshal may assist with the Title 24 program. The Deputy Fire Marshal also assists Housing with conducting annual fire drills for campus residential facilities and provide general guidance on the California Fire Code to the campus community.
The mission of the Fire Marshal group is to protect life and property from the destruction of fires and related perils through the direct action of prevention and preparedness for such events. The Fire Marshal's office oversees Title 19 inspections and Title 24 construction code compliance including: fire protection consultation on campus projects, engineering design criteria for fire and life safety, code interpretations, and recommendations to Physical Planning & Construction staff on campus building construction and renovation activities. The office reviews, approves construction plans and inspects buildings during construction/renovation, including acceptance tests for fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and other fire safety systems.
ICC Fire Inspector 1 (complete in 1 year of hire as condition of hire)
California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector 1 certification (Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D) (complete in 1 year of hire as condition of hire)
Physical and Environmental Demands: Ability to bend, squat, sit, stand, walk, climb ladders, push and pull objects. The ability to work in dusty, smokey, or confined spaces wearing appropriate PPE.
Must possess a valid license to drive in the State of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.
Knowledge of fire and life safety codes, regulations and standards including: California Code of Regulations (CCR) Titles 8, 19, 22, and 24, California Building Code, California Fire Code, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
Knowledge of fire protection principles, application of fire and building codes, safety and related training methods.
Ability to promote and maintain a team-oriented work environment and insure intra and inter team/unit cooperation, communication, and professionalism.
Ability to apply and interpret applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
