Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) is a multi-funded organization of the Business and Administrative Services division At UC Santa Cruz. CHES provides leadership in the areas of college student life and residential services, housing services and facilities, employee housing and capital planning, business and financial analysis, dining services, conference services, early education services, and the Bay Tree Bookstore and ID card services. Through these units, educational and developmental programs and services are offered to all members of the Campus community including students, faculty, staff, children and external constituents.
The Facilities unit of CHES provides comprehensive facilities support to over 9,500 student residents in ten colleges and six associated residential communities, as well as seven dining facilities. The mission of the Facilities unit is to plan for, develop and maintain a comfortable and safe physical environment for residents, and cost effectively maintain Housing and Dining facilities.
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Trades and Projects coordinator, The Carpenter Lead executes Major Maintenance improvements projects and skilled crafts repair work in support of College Housing and Educational Services (CHES) residential and dining units. The incumbent will perform preventative maintenance inspections of building envelope systems, fixtures and finishes, doors and associated hardware and wooden structural elements, as well as provide condition reports and repair recommendations to Facilities and Capital Planning managers. The Carpenter Lead works with Physical Planning and Construction on projects that involve minor building alterations.
The Carpenter Lead is responsible for coordinating the work of the Carpenters and ensuring that new and existing staff receive proper training. The incumbent is responsible for staff compliance with health and safety regulations as well as ensuring that all equipment is properly maintained.
The Carpenter Lead is responsible for the operation of the Carpentry shop and purchase of necessary equipment, parts inventory, and job materials.
Worksite Location will be at off campus warehouse: 509 Swift St. Santa Cruz, CA 95064
Some special conditions include:
Ability to become certified in fabrication and repair of DuPont Corian counter tops and bath surrounds within six months of hire.
Selected Candidate will be required to pass criminal history background check.
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
Ability to safely drive a University vehicle (light truck) with appropriate licensure and the ability to be certified to operate a forklift within six months of hire.
Journey level or equivalent experience in rough and finish carpentry, including the ability at the journey level necessary to plan and execute repair and minor remodeling projects.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and documents.
Ability to make working sketches, mockups or models as required.
Ability to identify parts, materials, equipment and supplies, specify and source materials, fixtures, fittings and hardware and estimate cost and time needed to complete projects.
Knowledge of applicable building codes, including Uniform Building Code, NFPA, California Building code. Position is open until filled; Initial Review Date: 03-08-2018
