ABOUT THE JOB:
Using skills as an experienced Student Services professional, the Graduate Student Specialist provides the full range of student services within the School of Natural Sciences including graduate student recruitment, admissions, academic advising, graduate student employment and funding, student conduct, and professional development. Independently advises students and resolves student issues inherent with academic, research, and employment requirements on campus. Advises graduate group chairs, faculty, and management on a variety of graduate student issues. Works with other departments and schools to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures.
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in related area and 3 years of directly related experience or equivalent experience/training.
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Solid knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
- Knowledge of University principles and procedures involved in areas of graduate recruitment, admissions, academic instruction, academic progress, student employment and funding, student conduct, and professional development.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Demonstrated ability in problem identification, reasoning, and development of original ideas to solve problems.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, students, University staff, and general public.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Multicultural competencies and ability to work with diverse populations.
