Job Summary The Beckman Institute at Caltech seeks a highly motivated Scientific Research Associate/Lab Manager to work in the established Beckman Institute Resource Center for CLARITY, Optogenetics and Vector Engineering (CLOVER Center: https://www.clover.caltech.edu).
The position will support the center by performing molecular cloning, cell culture, virus production, tissue sample processing and immunohistochemistry. In addition, the Scientific Research Associate/Lab Manager will assist with maintaining common lab supply stocks, compliance with laboratory safety protocols and controlled substance logs. There will be opportunities to carry out one or more independent research projects, as well as participate in collaborative efforts with other labs, on and off campus. On occasion, the Scientific Research Associate/Lab Manager will also support the educational element of the CLOVER center by helping to organize and run workshops. Training will be provided as needed, but the work will require significant independence of day-to-day operations to achieve the overall goals of the projects. The position is available immediately and the candidate should be available to start by Summer-Fall 2018.
The position requires outstanding organizational skills, as well as experience managing a life science laboratory. The candidate will work independently, under general guidance from the supervisor, and must exhibit strong problem solving skills (e.g. be able to accurately recognize irregularities in experimental results and modify experiments as needed). Must be accurate, efficient, organized and keep detailed records. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment are essential.
Job Duties - Manage laboratory personnel and daily operations for smooth functioning. - Design DNA and viral constructs to address original research projects (e.g. target a new peptide system using novel serotypes, promoters, enhancers) and take it to completion by performing molecular cloning using established and state-of-the-art techniques. - Implement experimental designs to test new gene expression constructs and for recombinant virus production (adeno-associated viruses and lentiviruses) by cell culture (e.g. selecting based on literature search the appropriate cell lines). - Independently perform experiments, collect and analyze data, and assist the PI and Director by preparing the findings for publication. - Conduct literature searches for relevant experimental and theoretical information. - Present findings at group meetings and participate in lab discussions. - Consult PI and other laboratory staff to refine and adapt methodology to fit evolving research requirements and experimental parameters. - Implement and maintain appropriate lab practices and infrastructure. - Maintain and coordinate use of laboratory equipment and prepare laboratory stocks. - Inventory and order lab supplies and create and train other new staff and students on safe laboratory practices. - Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in biology or related field required. - At least three years of experience in a research laboratory. - Must have broad familiarity and hands-on experience with molecular and cellular biology, modern cloning methods and primer and gene synthesis design. - Must have direct laboratory experience with mammalian tissue culture, cell transfection and general sterile technique. - Working knowledge of sequence analysis tools such as BLAST, SnapGene/DNA Star/Vector NTI and primer design software. - Familiarity and hands-on experience with the operation of standard lab equipment and with computer software for document generation and data analysis. - Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with students and all levels of staff as well as with external collaborators. - Ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously. - Ability to resolve technical problems and adapt easily to changing needs and priorities. - Must possess a high level of initiative.
