This position will serve as the lead for all waste management program activities at UC Davis Health with the exception of hazardous waste. The position is within the Environmental Services Department, and will report to the Manager of EVS. Under general direction, work independently to develop, implement and provide guidance for programs designed to provide efficient and cost effective waste management services to all units within UC Davis Health, including the hospital and all of clinical operations if EVS has oversight for cleaning the location. Direct waste diversion and recycling efforts for UC Davis Health by developing programs, evaluating their implementation and submitting required reports, including: construction and demolition waste diversion, single stream recycling, composting of food waste and green (landscaping) waste, electronic waste, and development of new opportunities for waste diversion. Initiate programs to minimize the generation of medical waste. Develop cost saving initiatives in areas such as cardboard recycling, reusable pharmaceutical and sharps containers, improvements in solid and medical waste processing and disposal. Position requires extensive walking. Must be able to wear appropriate safety equipment. Job may entail working outdoors in inclimate weather.REQUIRED--3-5 years of progressive experience in the area of waste management.--Experience in planning, developing, managing and executing waste management programs. --Knowledge of waste management, safety, environmental health, infection control practices and Joint Commission Environment of Care requirements.--Knowledge in the proper use of personal protective equipment, and safe practices related to blood borne pathogens.--Oral and written communication skills to communicate the intent of codes and regulations, policies and procedures in a manner accessible to a broad audience. --Experience in use of the Microsoft Office suite and internet search. --Skills and knowledge to make sound decisions and apply professional knowledge and expertise from disciplines waste management and waste diversion using original and innovative approaches and techniques to solve complex non-routine problems.--Valid California Driver's License and participate in the DMV Pull Notice.--Must be able to work special work schedules, including variable schedules on evening and night shift. --Must be able to work occasional overtime and be able to respond 24 hours per day and seven days per week.PREFERRED--Bachelor's degree, preferably in Environmental Sciences or similar discipline.--Waste management program experience in an academic or healthcare setting.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT - THIS POSITION MAY BE SUBJECT TO A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, DRUG SCREEN, LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING, MEDICAL EVALUATION CLEARANCE, AND FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENT
