Job Summary As a member of the Design and Construction team the Staff Architect reports to the Senior Director of Design and Construction or their designee.
The Staff Architect's primary responsibility is to provide design services to support both minor and major renovation and new construction projects. In this capacity, the Staff Architect will work with other assigned Design & Construction personnel, as well as meet with various Division/Department representatives to gather and review project specific requirements that will be utilized in developing concept and final designs. The Staff Architect will be responsible for prioritizing design related workload to facilitate the project delivery schedule. Other responsibilities will include quarterly updates of the Caltech design guidelines and standards and oversight and management of AutoCAD programs and standards.
Job Duties - Provide coordination of design packages from all disciplines needed to complete construction documents - Act as primary point of contact for Caltech design guideline issues related to interior architecture, laboratory design, and MEP engineering - Design spaces meeting all required codes, regulations, guides and best practices - Act as Caltech expert related to laboratory design and innovation ideas to facilitate better projects - Stay knowledgeable and up to date on laboratory and research space design concepts to ensure Caltech makes best use of its resources - Responsible for facilitating entire design process for projects assigned. This includes collaboration with other designers/engineers (electrical, mechanical, structural, etc.) and team members to investigate existing conditions, evaluate options, troubleshoot issues and recommend design solutions in the best interest of Caltech and the specific 'client' for the design - Produce complete architectural and engineering design packages in preparation for bid. Manage design for assigned projects from project inception through completed construction
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Planning or equivalent - 10+ years of work experience in the architectural/design field for new buildings and/or renovation projects. Institutional and Higher Education project with lab planning experience is preferred - Able to verify field dimensions and conditions for any project design work - Able to read, interpret and revise architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing and engineering drawings - Able to research products/materials and obtain information/specifications as needed to design projects - Strong oral and written communication skills are required, as is the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and other professionals - Proficient in the use of AutoCAD, Revit, MS Outlook, Word, and Excel - Complete OSHA 10-hour Construction Training within six months of employment and refresher training every four years - Must be able to lift and carry 25 lbs., walk half a mile unaided, climb ladders and stairs, and enter and leave excavations for the purpose of observing and planning work Preferred Qualifications - State of California Licensed Architect - LEED GA Certified
