Job Summary The Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCE) is steeped in a tradition of excellence. With more than 40 faculty members working at the forefront of their fields to advance knowledge in the areas of chemistry, chemical engineering, and biochemistry and molecular biophysics, the faculty work in close partnership with undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral scholars; together they apply their most innovative ideas to our fundamental knowledge of chemical processes, thereby tackling some of chemistry's most complex problems.
Reporting to the Division Administrator, the Scientific Glassblower will run an existing one-person shop that resides within CCE and is used by researchers campus-wide. The Scientific Glassblower performs highly skilled technical work in design, fabrication, and repair of laboratory glassware. This is a full-time position.
Job Duties - Performs routine and one-of-a-kind fabrication of scientific apparatus for internal Caltech researchers, often from verbal descriptions and non-dimensional drawings. - Aids researchers in the design and design modification of scientific apparatus. - Performs customization or repair of broken glassware. - Prioritizes jobs and accomplishes work by deadlines and within turnover guidelines. - Provides estimates of time and material, tracks jobs, and recharges time/material to accounts. - Manages Scientific Glassblowing Shop inventory. - Maintains, orders, prices, and stocks shop inventory. - Sells items. - Completes dispersal sheets. - Utilizes web-based procurement system or P-card for ordering stock and supplies. - Consults with and trains researchers who seek to do some of their own glassblowing. - Schedules or performs equipment maintenance and repair. - Maintains records and files for the shop. - Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications - 2 years' experience in an academic or industrial research setting. - Experience constructing specialized glass apparatus. - Experience constructing complex borosilicate, pyrex, and quartz glass apparatus. - Experience in vacuum line work is essential. - Experience in glass to metal seals. - Computer literacy. - Teaching glassblowing fundamentals to researchers.
Preferred Qualifications - Completion of an apprenticeship in a specialty glassblowing shop.
