Position Announcement The University of California at Merced seeks an Associate Director for the Merritt Writing Program (Academic Coordinator Series Level II), a 12-month administrative position reporting to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Director for the Merritt Writing Program.

The Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) is the administrative home for College One, Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning, Merritt Writing Program, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center, UCDC and UC Center in Sacramento programs, academic support programs (e.g., Math Center, Chem Center, Writing Center), and First-Year and Undeclared Advising (effective Fall 2018).
Program Description The Merritt Writing Program (MWP) is an independent academic unit which operates under the supervision of the Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education (https://writingprogram.ucmerced.edu/). The MWP provides curriculum and instruction for lower division and upper division writing courses, including required composition courses and writing courses in undergraduate majors. The MWP is committed to working with UC Merced’s many first-generation students, its culturally and linguistically diverse student population, and its English-language learners.
Position Description Reporting to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and Director of the Merritt Writing Program (MWP), the Associate Director of the MWP supports the program by coordinating day-to-day functions and assisting the Associate Dean/Director in achieving program goals and priorities. This is a 12-month, Academic Coordinator II position.
The Associate Director is an integral part of the MWP and focuses primarily on ensuring the smooth and efficient accomplishment of MWP tasks. The Associate Director is an active participant in the MWP’s efforts to create a collaborative and inclusive work environment that respects diversity its many forms. As a member of the administrative team, the Associate Director works with the Associate Dean/Director to foster the ongoing professional development of faculty as well as the pedagogical integrity of the program’s curriculum.
The Associate Director’s duties include (but are not limited to): • Responding to routine requests from MWP faculty for guidance with student concerns and pedagogical advice • Coordinating work of MWP committees • Organizing and conducting assessment activities • Creating and updating MWP program materials (e.g., MWP handbook; content for Canvas site; video files) • Collaborating with Associate Dean/Director on monthly MWP meeting agendas and preparing meeting activities • Assisting with gathering data and preparing reports • Assisting the Associate Dean/Director on special projects and initiatives • In collaboration with the Associate Dean/Director, coordinating and conducting classroom observations • Facilitating MWP peer-to-peer mentoring program • Working with Associate Dean/Director and MWP staff on course scheduling and course assignments • Performing other duties as assigned by Associate Dean/Director
Required qualifications: • Master’s degree • Two years of teaching writing at the college level • One year of administrative and/or supervisory experience in a writing program or other related program (e.g., writing across the curriculum, writing center) • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred qualifications • Terminal degree in rhetoric and composition or closely allied field • Five years of teaching college-level writing • Two or more years of administrative and/or supervisory experience in a writing program or other related program • Scholarly interest in writing program administration
In addition to the above qualifications, the Associate Director must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
