The Facilities Management and Development (FMD) organization is a unit within the Administration and Finance division and is responsible for the management and development of facilities on the university campus. The Auto/Equipment Mechanic works within the Transportation shop of the Facilities Operation Department of FMD which is responsible for providing quality maintenance and minor repair and renovation services that meet or exceed our customers' expectations. The purpose of Transportation Services is to maintain a fleet of approximately 580 vehicles and equipment. The campus fleet consists of buses, vans, trucks, sedans, generators, mowers, scooters, golf carts, and other miscellaneous vehicles.
Under general supervision, the Auto/Equipment Mechanic performs journey-level automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanical work for preventative maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification of automotive, maintenance, construction and/or other power-driven equipment for the campus, including university vehicles and generators; cleans and maintains materials, tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintains a safe and clean work environment; and consults and works with other trades workers.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Education and Experience:
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as an automotive and/or equipment mechanic which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard apprenticeship program.
Licenses, Certificates,Degrees, Credentials:
Possession of a valid Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire
Possession of (or have the ability to obtain) and maintain a valid California Class B Commercial Driver's license and the approved medical certificate within three months of hire.
Thorough knowledge of automotive and/or equipment mechanics including electrical systems, brake and engine overhaul.
Thorough knowledge of methods, tools, materials, equipment and computerized systems used in the maintenance, adjustment and repair of engines, equipment and accessories.
Working knowledge of wiring and electrical theory and engine principles.
Working knowledge of hydraulic systems
Working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to automotive and other power-driven equipment, including applicable smog regulations.
Demonstrated ability to make skilled repairs to automotive, maintenance and/or construction equipment.
Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions and perform a variety of skilled repairs on equipment.
Ability to work from schematics, drawings and sketches to fabricate parts; and perform required welding.
Ability to inspect vehicles and equipment and determine extent of repairs; accurately estimate the cost, time and materials of mechanical work and repairs.
Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record keeping systems and prepare standard reports.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
Knowledge and ability to service and repair emergency generators.
Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position and follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
Ability to demonstrate professionalism in entering occupied areas including student residential halls, faculty and staff offices and other university space.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Applicants must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test. Hired employee will be enrolled in and subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per HR 94-32.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Ability to work in an area where there are loud noises from mechanical equipment.
Ability to work in dirt and grease and in various weather conditions; such as heat, cold, wind, and rain.
Ability to lift at least 40 lbs.
Ability to squat, kneel, crawl, and climb ladders and perform mechanical work in awkward positions.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
