The Department of Design at California State University, Sacramento is currently accepting applications for a full-time tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Graphic Design.
Currently, the Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design is one of three degrees, along with the B.A. in Photography and B.A. in Interior Design that form the Department of Design which is housed in the College of Arts & Letters.
The programs comprising the Department of Design instruct students in areas of technical and aesthetic expertise, broaden their understanding of the history and theory of design, as well as ground students in the variety of cultural and professional practices necessary to be an effective photographer, interior architect, or graphic designer.
The Department of Design is in the process of transforming its curricular structure. The B.S. in Graphic Design is being replaced by a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. This process should be complete by Fall 2019 and is contingent on final program authorization from the CSU Chancellor's Office, WASC and NASAD.
The teaching of lecture and studio classes with a concentration on graphic design and its application to screen and user interactivity
The pursuit of scholarly and creative activities that maintain an appropriate professional profile
Service and contributions to the Department of Design and the University through participation in Department, College, and University level committees and organizations
Ongoing commitment in service and contributions to the local and regional community
Student advising of prospective and existing program majors
Masters degree in Design or other appropriately related field.
In-depth understanding of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design from a visual communication perspective.
Strong working knowledge of the production process related to user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design execution.
Strong knowledge of traditional graphic design methods, principles and practices.
In-depth understanding of basic design processes including research, concept development, design editing, and product execution.
One to three years of college or university level teaching experience in studio and lecture courses.
Experience working with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds and experiences, in a team-based environment.
Strong background in research for user-oriented design (i.e., demographic, psychographic, ethnographic research, etc.).
Experience in narrative construction in the context of graphic design problem solving.
Working knowledge of time-based design for the screen (i.e., motion type, video, etc.).
Experience with instruction in computer labs, teaching digitally-based curriculum, with a demonstrated proficiency in software and hardware appropriate for interactive design.
Experience with curriculum development.
