THEATRE AND DANCE DEPARTMENT - Costume Shop Coordinator (Performing Arts Technician II). The Theatre & Dance Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California is seeking applicants for its Costume Shop Coordinator (Performing Arts Technician II).
Under the general supervision of the Department Chair and in direct collaboration with the Department Costume Designer, who provides lead work direction, this position is responsible for the independent execution of a variety of complex production projects, including their planning, organization, patterning and construction, for Theatre and Dance Department Productions, as well as providing support to the costume construction courses. Through regular consultation with department faculty, this position will supervise all aspects of costume construction and ensure completion of projects in a timely manner. Responsibilities include: hiring and supervising student assistants to work in the costume shop; working within production budgets, purchasing the necessary materials and maintaining tools and equipment used in the costume shop; organizing and maintaining department costume storage areas, and any rental of these costumes; and providing a clean and safe working environment for the costume facilities. This position is also expected to attend all dress rehearsals for department productions.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production. (12 units of applicable college course or 6 months of professional training may be substituted for 6 months of required experience).
Thorough and specialized knowledge and experience in costume production.
Sophisticated knowledge of design theory and principles in order to be able to translate design specifications or drawings into costumes/crafts.
Knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of costumes.
Comprehensive knowledge of costume techniques, including hand sewing and machine techniques, and ability to work with a wide range of costuming materials.
Ability to independently manage projects and productions.
Ability to work on more complex projects/designs and to work with more difficult materials and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards and ability to train others in safety measures.
Ability to provide direct lab support to students involved in productions and costume construction.
Ability to supervise production, assign tasks and supervise student work crews.
Ability to perform mathematical computations accurately to carry out plans related to design and budgets; ability to prepare and track production budgets.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good working relations with others (staff, faculty, students and the community) and within a diverse multicultural environment.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
BFA or MFA in Costume Design or Construction.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Ability to create a safe space environment in assisting students and/or designer in one-on-one costume fitting sessions.
Work involves building and altering costumes, requiring frequent use of sewing machines, seam rippers, scissors, steam irons and dye vat. Safety practices must be observed while working with or around such tools and equipment.
Demonstrated ability to visually inspect costume design, techniques, materials, and construction.
Ability to frequently stand, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, bend, and reach. Manual dexterity to assemble components and parts for design and construction of costumes.
Ability to lift/carry or otherwise position up to 50 pounds.
Work involves completing errands by traveling across campus to other offices and buildings and to travel off campus to vendors and stores.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date.
