Position Description: ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR OF SOIL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT. Full-time, academic year, tenure track position with an appointment in the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences (NRES) Department within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, CA. Starting date is September 12, 2019. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Cal Poly has a tradition of excellence in teaching and our motto is 'Learn by Doing.' Strong interests in laboratory/field-based undergraduate and graduate teaching along with excellent written and oral communication skills are required. The successful candidate will teach courses in soil morphology, introductory soil science, forest and range soils, digital soil mapping, wetlands, and additional related courses depending on curricular needs and the candidate's expertise and professional goals. Particular expertise is desired in soil resources management as it relates to land reclamation and restoration, wildfire impacted soils, solid waste management, urban soils, and soil construction. The successful candidate will mentor students in senior projects and graduate theses, provide general academic and student club advising, participate in Future Farmers of America (FFA) land judging state finals held on campus annually, teach graduate level courses and/or teach in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program, and nurture overall student development. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to link applied research and practice, and to participate in scholarly activities (e.g. research, publishing, grant writing) as part of his or her professional development and contribution to the University's mission. These activities must address societal needs and challenges that confront practicing soil scientists and the private sector. The successful candidate will apply his/her discipline to many scales from the micro-scale to the broader regional and landscape scale. Service to the NRES Department, Cal Poly's Agricultural Operations Division, the university, as well as local, state, and national professional organizations is expected. Departmental and university service may include committee assignments, supporting student-club activities, and enhancing student enrollment. This position will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty in the NRES Department, College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES), Cal Poly Strawberry Center, Center for Sustainability, Swanton Pacific Ranch, and other institutions and entities across the university. Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only): Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in soil science or closely related field by the starting date is required. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the general public is essential. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to initiate, complete, secure external funding, and publish research. Preferred Qualifications: Special consideration will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in teaching and research, as well as the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Particular expertise and experience is desired across multiple soil science, agriculture, and land management.
