Position Summary: California Digital Library (CDL) is a collaborative effort of the ten campuses of the University of California. As a UC systemwide library, CDL provides services to and on behalf of the UC system in partnership with the UC campus libraries. As a globally-connected digital library, CDL occupies a unique position between the local UC campuses and the global digital library infrastructure. The primary user base for CDL services and programs includes UC faculty, students, and library staff. The CDL is a unit within the UC Office of the President, has a staff of 70+ and is located in downtown Oakland.
This UC3 Product Manager position will oversee the strategy for UC3's digital preservation and research data management activities, including the product management and outreach activities for the Merritt preservation repository project and service (https://merritt.cdlib.org).
A successful candidate will advocate for the needs of our constituents and translate those needs into detailed enhancements of diverse scope, size, impact, and budget. He or she will be an experienced professional with a full understanding of product/service development and production practices. He or she will demonstrate sound judgment and a focus on solving design, financial, marketing, and administrative problems as they arise.
Because this position will include UC systemwide, national, and international outreach, a successful candidate must be an enthusiastic advocate for digital preservation best practices, open source/science community building, and digital curation skills development. A main component of this will be developing and conducting training for researchers and librarians on a variety of digital preservation, research data, and digital curation topics.

Duty 1: Sets high-level priorities for feature development and oversees ongoing operations.
Fosters and maintains constructive working relationships with program stakeholders, including the UC library and research communities.
Responsible for the conception, development, implementation, and coordination of activities for the Merritt project. Leads project teams with diverse expertise, including programmers, librarians, archivists, user experience, and web production staff.
Assembles and leads cross-functional teams for assigned deliverables.
Develops and participates in marketing and professional outreach activities and informational campaigns to raise awareness of Merritt.
Acts as product/service liaison across CDL, the UC campuses, external agencies, and customers to ensure effective production, delivery, and operation of Merritt (maintenance and/or new features).
Provide progress reports outlining key activities and progress toward achieving overall goals. Develops and reports on metrics/key performance indicators and provides corresponding analysis. Function:Product Managing & Stakeholder Engagement Percent: 40
Duty 2: Represents UC3, CDL, and UC to the public. Fosters and maintains close working relationships with a wide variety of organizations with a particular emphasis on the digital curation, digital preservation, and research data management communities.
Plans and guides the development of program's informational materials (e.g., training materials, video presentations, posters, and other promotional items).
Plans and manages an effective training strategy to raise awareness of UC3 projects. Responsible for coordinating communications about the program and building training regarding digital curation and research data management topics.
Works to gain adoption of the Merritt platform and/or of digital preservation best practices across the UC community. Function:Outreach & Training Percent: 30
Duty 3: Provides leadership and guidance for the management of the Merritt project and service.
Develops project plans, including goals, deliverables, resources, budget and timelines for launches of products, services, and enhancements of diverse scope, size, impact, and budget.
Works collaboratively with the UC3 Director to plan and oversee the processes of developing and managing the program budget and monitoring program expenditures.
Works collaboratively with other CDL program directors to facilitate cross-team collaborations.
Although there are no direct reports, oversees work for team of developer, UX designers, and web producers. Determines staffing needs, and assists in making decisions on recruitment, retention, training, career development, and performance evaluation.
Evaluates and presents new technologies and industry trends. Recommends those that are applicable to current products or services and the organization's long-range strategic plans.
Identifies, organizes, and participates in technical discussions with key advisory groups and other customers/clients. Identifies additional opportunities for value-added product/service delivery based on customer/client interaction and feedback. Function:Product Planning & Oversight Percent: 20

Job Requirements Bachelor's degree in the lab sciences, library and information science, or other disciplines related to research data management.
Broad knowledge of product development concepts, practices, standards, and processes. Demonstrated ability to identify key issues critical to the organization's needs and the success of a desired product, service, or enhancement.
Proven ability to research, collect, and analyze information for use in determining product options or alternatives. Strong organization and project management skills.
Strong oral communication skills to convey and explain information effectively.
Strong written communications skills to draft clear and concise documentation, reports, and specifications.
Ability to lead, build consensus, and promote the exchange of information among project teams and internal and external constituencies. Required
Experience working in an academic research library or digital library setting. Preferred
