The Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist, Step I - V, at 100% time with an expected start date of 4/1/2019.
About the UC Berkeley, Department of Chemistry - Chang: Research in the Chang Lab is interdisciplinary, aiming to harness the power of biological systems to solve outstanding problems at the frontiers of chemistry. Members of the lab leverage numerous techniques to design, probe, and optimize systems of reactions both in vivo and in vitro. These strategies encompass the burgeoning fields of synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and biocatalysis, and are supported by studies in fundamental biochemistry and organic synthesis. This position will be required to carry out a number of engineering and physiological experiments to meet the project goals including but not limited to: constructing pathways for monomer production in Escherichia coli, directed evolution of 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenases and poly(hydroxyl)alkanoate polymerases, generation of chromosomal E. coli mutants via CRISPR-Cas9 technology, microbiology, protein purification, in vitro biochemical assays, GC-MS, HPLC, and metabolite extraction and purification.
Responsible for engineering pathways to produce branched hydroxyacids and enoic acids from sugar and carboxylic acids as monomers for enzymatic and chemical polymerization.
Studying and engineering of the enzymes polymerases.
Application Requirements: Applicants are required to submit their most recently updated curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and provide only contact information for a minimum of three (3) references at the time of application. It is optional to provide more than three (3) references up to a maximum of five (5) total references.
