This diagnostic medical physics position will provide technical support to Environmental Health & Safety, and hold a faculty position in the Department of Radiology. This person will be the diagnostic medical physicist expert within EH&S and supervise the Quality Assurance (QA) Technologist and Dosimetry Coordinator. The Medical Physicist formulates strategies for assuring state and federal regulatory compliance, makes decisions related to Joint Commission compliance, and oversees all medical physics processes. The Medical Physicist will oversee and perform scheduled QA tests, generate subsequent reports, ensure compliance items are met, perform patient dose calculations, perform investigations and provide corrective actions for radiation related incidents and assure all exposures to radiation are as low as possible (ALARA). This position will coordinate with and provide expert technical expertise to the Diagnostic Medical Physics group in Radiology to maintain the clinical Quality Assurance (QA) program for all the diagnostic and research radiation producing machines at UCDHS. Duties will not only include providing oversight and guidance to the QA technologist but to the Health Physics staff was well. The position will manage the Radiology patient QA program. This entails review of patient dose information, analysis of trends and actions to be taken to assure dose optimization. This individual will maintain all QA files. In addition, they will provide staff with expert recommendations and information concerning compliance with Medical Center radiation safety policies and procedures, State and Federal regulations and Joint Commission and CMS requirements. The person must operate independently under general supervision. As part of their duties, this individual will be expected to review the actions of various departments throughout the Health System with respect to the use of imaging equipment and radiation safety. The successful candidate will spend 20-30% time collaborating with both PhD and MD faculty, as well as teaching radiology residents, technologists, and others on the elements of medical physics and radiation dosimetry. This position assists in unique special projects for the department including maintaining ACR accreditation. This position supports the EH&S goal of fostering communication/coordination within the Health System community.REQUIRED-Master's degree or higher in medical physics. -Certification by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Medical Physics or by the American Board of Medical Physics in Diagnostic Medical Physics or Board eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Medical Physics (defined as accepted to take the Part 2 exam).-Advanced knowledge of the quality assurance testing processes for imaging systems and associated radiation safety.-Expert knowledge of medical physics instrument theory, operation and counting statistics. Ability to utilize survey meters and other portable equipment to assess and determine radiological conditions. Maintain and calibrate radiation survey meters.-Supervisory skills to mentor the staff in working with diagnostic x-ray equipment.-Knowledge of health physics including the elements of a radiation safety program and ALARA principles. -Knowledge of the ACR accreditation process.-Knowledge of federal, state and Joint Commission radiologic regulatory requirements.-Experience formulating strategies to assess radiological conditions, determine if radiation measures are being implemented in an effective manner, analyze facts and circumstances, recognize the need for action and take steps to resolve problems. -Skills to perform shielding calculations including meetings with contractors and staff as well as provide field surveys during the construction process. -Advanced knowledge of radiation dosimetry (occupational and clinical) including practical application of this knowledge to ensure occupational exposure limits are not exceeded and the ability to assess radiation doses to patients.-Strong communication (oral, written, presentation, documentation) and interpersonal skills, to effectively interact with customers, convey technical information in lay terms, interpret and advise on regulations and laws, conduct training and educational programs, and develop detailed compliance reports and correspondence.-Demonstrated technical writing skills to develop detailed compliance reports, environmental assessment reports, procedures, interpret results of data and correspondence.-Skills to conduct and coordinate audits, investigations and evaluations and achieve necessary corrective action in a timely manner.-Strong organizational and time management skills to organize a variety of concurrent activities, set realistic goals and objectives, plan ahead and meet deadlines without compromising quality.PREFERRED-Advanced knowledge of CCR Title 17 requirements regarding radiation producing machines and good practices.
