The Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (CASS) is an inter-disciplinary unit of excellence for research at UCSD. CASS activities are generally organized by research group. CASS was founded in 1979 as a University response to the growing academic and research activities in astrophysics and space sciences
Incumbent will be responsible for mechanical and structural design, analysis, and implementation of complex astronomical instruments. Incumbent plays a key role in translating scientific requirements into engineering specifications and design of the instrument and operations. Incumbent will be influential in the direction of the research program and development of a new on-site astronomical instrument and observatory.
Incumbent will be a collaboration with multiple national institutions and the incumbent will work directly with a range of academic and engineering staff at CASS and other facilities. Uses advanced engineering concepts to creatively address complex, unique problem sets. Exercises independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Regularly works in collaboration with other engineering fields (i.e.mechanical engineering, system engineering, electrical engineering).
Advanced Degree in a related engineering fields (Mechanical and/or Systems) and at least five (5) years of experience in development, construction, deployment or operation of scientific instruments and equipment; and/or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Advanced knowledge associated with the planning, development, and fabrication of engineering systems. Experience in one of the following engineering fields: Mechanical Engineering or System Engineering.
Advanced knowledge of specialized design work as well as the overall field. Design work and overall experience in the following engineering fields: Mechanical Engineering and/or System Engineering.
Proven creativity and problem solving abilities to apply principles, practices and procedures within discipline to complete difficult assignments.
Demonstrated project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of research objectives.
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner. Experience preparing interface control and requirement documents spanning engineering disciplines.
Advanced interpersonal and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and influence others.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner; readily assess complex challenges and barriers and recommend effective resolutions.
Proven ability to prepare interface control and requirement documents spanning engineering disciplines in electrical, mechanical and software.
Previous experience working on complex technical programs with multiple phases.
Ability for occasional travel to vendors and astronomical observatory sites for implementation.
