This position serves the Energy Department in energy data communication, visualization, and validation. The ideal candidate should have experience in energy efficiency and its practical applications in metering, monitoring, utility billing and building management systems. The ideal candidate will also have a background in the business information systems (hardware, software) that support these technologies.
This position is focused on software integration of BMS building data from related databases. This will include, but not be limited to, data cleaning, developing operational metrics, developing building models, building KPI's and automated diagnostics.
This position applies Physical Plant Energy department business processes and analysis concepts to support automated data gathering and analysis. Works on business process related support issues of limited to moderate scope. Involves evaluation of processes, procedures and data that will require analysis using a variety of factors
The UC Santa Cruz Physical Plant (PP) is committed to creating an exceptional campus physical environment to support the research, teaching, health care and community service mission of the University. PP employs approximately 280 professional staff and the Energy Department within Physical Plant. Physical Plant acts as steward for over $10 million in Purchased Utilities operating funds. As a steward PP strives to achieve its goals in efficiently operating and maintaining the UC Santa Cruz campus environment. Located in the Business and Administrative Services organization, PP is organized into 5 distinct units: (1) Grounds Services, (2) Building and Utility Services, (3) Work Management, (4) Business & Fiscal Operations, and (5) Custodial Services. The Energy Department is one of two units within Work Management, and works collaboratively with the units within PP and throughout the campus organization.

Physical Plant's Mission is to contribute to the university's mission by operating and maintaining a safe, clean, and efficiently run campus.
The Energy Management unit within Physical Plant aims to devise, promote and implement efficient use and conservation of energy and water, as well as to help UC Santa Cruz operate as efficiently as possible. The main functions served by the unit include internal utility management, energy efficiency projects, and reporting on campus energy use.
Common problems solved by the employee:
Resolving an apparent data integrity issue with a electric/gas/water meter that would involve data analysis, review of data collection methods, discussion with metering staff, and potential site visits to meter.
Discussing billing issues with UC Santa Cruz staff and utility staff to determine a corrective measure in billing.
Performing site visits with UC Santa Cruz staff and outside consultants to verify/determine installed lighting/HVAC equipment, evaluate energy efficient solutions, and provide a report to campus staff on recommendations.
Working through energy and carbon reporting issues with UC Santa Cruz students and staff.
Converting hard line construction drawings of metering into relational database hierarchy.
Less frequent and more complex problems solved by the employee:
Resolving a discrepancy between construction drawings, installed equipment and/or energy usage by reviewing drawings, performing site visits, interviewing related students and staff.
Troubleshooting data logger and trending issues with product vendors, and campus BMS staff.
Problems/situations that are referred to this employee's supervisor:
Complex issues discovered in the design and construction of an energy efficiency project.
Discovery of large scale potential data integrity issues related to facilities energy systems.
Bachelor's degree in related area or a minimum of two and a half plus years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in performing energy efficiency audits on lighting and mechanical systems, along with an understanding of energy efficiency concepts and principles.
Experience in data analysis to determine potential project and quantify costs/benefits.
General knowledge of business and process analysis functions (invoices, bill verification, approvals, recharges, authorizations, etc.).
Experience gathering, organizing, and presenting large sets of data in an effective manner.
