Stanford University is seeking a highly motivated Microbiome Construction Specialist to build complex bacterial communities using state-of-the-art microbiology and genetics techniques. The Microbiome Construction Specialist will play a critical role in our ambitious new effort to build the microbiome from scratch. Our goal is to take advantage of the tremendous promise of the microbiome to treat human disease. Candidates should have good hands and strong organizational skills. Ideal candidates are self-starters, comfortable with autonomy, and embrace opportunities to tackle new problems and challenges as part of a dynamic team in a start-up-like environment within the University. This is a two-year, fixed-term appointment with opportunity for renewal.
The primary duties of this role include:
Designing and building a new platform (first of its kind) for the high-throughput cultivation of fastidious anaerobic bacterial strains from the human gut microbiome.
Designing and building high-complexity synthetic/defined communities consisting of 100+ bacterial strains mixed together.
Developing novel assays for defined, high-complexity communities including a high-precision metagenomics-based read mapping pipeline for determining composition and mass spectrometry based assays for determining the chemical output of a community.
Designing communities for treating specific disease states related to the consumption or production of small molecules by the microbiome, including communities that are meant to produce, consume, or not produce specific molecules and suites of molecules.
Training new graduate students and postdoctoral associates in anaerobic bacterial culture, synthetic community design, and synthetic community assembly.
