The Facilities Management and Development (FM&D) organization is a unit within the Administration and Finance division and is responsible for the management, operations, and development of facilities on the university campus. Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities and grounds. FMD consists of five critical and interdependent support departments, including Facilities Customer & Business Services; Energy, Utilities, & Sustainability; Environmental Health & Safety; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; Facility Operations; and Special Projects.
The purpose of Landscape Services is to provide landscape maintenance services to the campus community. Under general supervision of the Landscape Manager, the Lead Grounds-worker oversees the work of employees engaged in general gardening and grounds maintenance work in assigned areas of the campus grounds; athletic field maintenance; and in grounds projects such as planting major flower or shrub areas, laying sprinkler systems or laying concrete and asphalt. The Lead Grounds-worker position is to provide grounds maintenance services at assigned site/s; ensure attractive and safe grounds area/s and athletic fields; perform a variety of special grounds maintenance operations; provide training and oversight of assigned staff; and maintain grounds for assemblies, events and/or recreational activities.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience in planting, cultivating and maintaining flowers and shrubs or in general grounds maintenance work.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS:
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Thorough knowledge of providing lead work direction to employees requiring abilities in planning, training, coordinating and inspecting the work of others and by the greater technical knowledge of horticultural methods and materials and plants required
Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns and trees.
General knowledge of and approved methods and materials used in the control and eradication of common plant diseases, pests and weeds.
General knowledge of horticultural methods and materials.
General knowledge of planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.
General knowledge of sprinkler repair and irrigation fundamentals.
Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others.
Ability to provide training, interpret policies and explain methods and procedures.
Ability to inspect and evaluate the work of others.
Ability to perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.
Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations at a level appropriate for the position.
Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergencies.
Ability to interact and communicate in an effective manner, as well as, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty, co-workers and the public.
California Qualified Applicator Certificate.
Experience in an institutional environment and/or athletic facility.
Experience in team leadership and industry experience; leadership skills

Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
Must be able to work in outdoor areas where there is exposure to extreme elements, such as noise, dust, dirt, heat, cold, wind and rain.
Must be able to perform work involving, but not limited to, lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, and maneuvering heavy objects; squatting, climbing, twisting, standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, and kneeling for long periods.
Must be able to work various shifts (as applicable), including weekends, and a willingness to switch shifts to meet operational needs. Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
