The Facilities Management and Development (FM&D) organization is a unit within the Administration and Finance division and is responsible for the management, operations, and development of facilities on the university campus. Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities and grounds. FMD consists of five critical and interdependent support departments, including Facilities Customer & Business Services; Energy, Utilities, & Sustainability; Environmental Health & Safety; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; Facility Operations; and Special Projects.
The purpose of Landscape Services is to provide landscape maintenance services to the campus community. Under general supervision, the Pest Control and Spray Specialist identifies and eradicates noxious pests, insects, plant diseases, and weed conditions in campus buildings and grounds; assists in the planning of horticultural spray and pest eradication programs; and applies horticultural sprays and other dangerous chemical agents. The Pest Control and Spray Specialist performs specialized spraying and pest eradication duties for a major portion of the incumbent's work time. Incumbents in the Grounds-worker classification or other grounds classifications may spray chemicals in assigned areas on campus on an occasional basis and may occasionally assist a Pest Control and Spray Specialist in specialized spraying activities, but are not required to possess the knowledge and abilities required to carry out a campus horticultural spray and pest eradication program.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in specialized pest and/or spray control work, or two years of experience in assisting a Pest Control and Spray Specialist in pest and spray control work.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS:
Possession of a California Commercial Applicator Certificate (QAC/QAL) and;
Possession of a valid California class C driver license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Thorough knowledge in the practice of managing pests using biological, cultural, mechanical, physical and chemical controls with emphasis on the least toxic approach;
Proper usage, application and dilutions of chemical pesticides used
Thorough knowledge in the use and care of various equipment peculiar to pest management techniques; hazards, precautions, use, handling and storage of pesticides, including safety procedures during operation of various equipment
Thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the particular plant disease or weed condition to be treated.
Thorough knowledge of the living habits of the particular noxious animal or insect to be exterminated.
Through knowledge of the characteristics and resultant effects of poisons and sprays applied.
Through knowledge of available materials and control techniques.
Through knowledge of county, State and Federal regulations governing the use of chemicals.
General knowledge of the relationships of the environment to pests and their control and the environmental impact of certain chemicals and safety precautions when using these chemicals.
Ability to recognize and properly treat horticultural and pest problems.
Ability to operate and make minor repairs to spray equipment.
Ability to maintain accurate records and submit reports to appropriate agencies of the State and county concerning types and quantities of chemicals used and when they were applied using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
Ability to provide lead work direction to others.
Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations at a level appropriate for the position.
Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
Ability to interact and communicate in an effective manner, as well as, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty, co-workers and the public.
Experience in an institutional environment and/or athletic facility.
Experience in institutional landscape and turf.
Experience in coordination of training for continuing education units and pesticide licenses

Must be able to work in outdoor areas where there is exposure to extreme elements, such as noise, dust, dirt, heat, cold, wind and rain.
Must be able to perform work involving, but not limited to, lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, and maneuvering heavy objects; squatting, climbing, twisting, standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, and kneeling for long periods.
Must be able to work various shifts (as applicable), including weekends, and a willingness to switch shifts to meet operational needs. Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.

Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
