Job Summary The Computer-Aided Design and Machining Instructor and Technician reports to the Shop Supervisor and provides supervision and oversight of students and researchers who work in the Jim Hall Prototyping Lab (JHPL), in the safe design and construction of course apparatus, particularly using computer-aided equipment such as CNC mills and lathes, 3D printers, laser cutters, and waterjet cutters. Additionally, this position provides oversight of students' use of traditional shop equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and supplementary shop accessories (including band saws, drill presses, hand tools, and other equipment). Provides instruction in machining and design related courses as needed by the MCE Department. Works closely and in tandem with the Shop Supervisor to ensure the safe operation of all equipment in the JHPL.
The Jim Hall Design and Prototyping Lab in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (MCE) is responsible for providing instructional and laboratory support to Caltech students. The facility provides supervision and instruction to students in the design and construction of course apparatus in support of numerous undergraduate courses.
Job Duties - Responsible for the proper maintenance, repair, and control of all computer-aided and conventional machinery in coordination with the Shop Supervisor. - Works closely with the Shop Supervisor and relevant course instructors to ensure all appropriate operating and safety procedures are in effect. - Provides instruction to students and researchers in proper shop practices, equipment usage, and safety procedures. - Maintains all necessary records of shop equipment, repair, and maintenance functions in coordination with the Shop Supervisor. - Assists in maintaining the physical integrity of the shop environment for safety and cleanliness. - Maintains competence in the rapid development of computer-aided design and construction technologies. - Other duties as assigned. - Hours: 9:45 AM - 6:15 PM.
Basic Qualifications - AA degree or equivalent and 3+ years of experience. - Knowledge of machining tools, including manual and CNC mills and lathes. - Knowledge of high technology tools, including water jet, laser cutter, and 3D printers. - Must possess a high level of interpersonal skills to effectively interact with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and Institute staff. - Ability to assist students with the conceptual design for projects. - Competent teaching skills. - Effective computer skills in SolidWorks, Microsoft Office, and related CAD/CAM and prototyping software. - Must be able to lift/carrying shop supplies, equipment and/or objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications - Instructional experience at the high school level or higher, in 3D printing and CAD/CAM (preferably HSM Works) of CNC machining courses. - Able to show examples of innovative projects using 3D printing, lasers, and/or CNC machining.
