![]() Data Center Facilities Engineer Stanford University JOB PURPOSE: Perform facilities engineering responsibilities involving the planning, design, construction, modification, operation, maintenance, and utilities. May serve as project leader in area of expertise for a major group of ongoing, technically complex projects with large budgets and requiring substantial coordination. CORE DUTIES:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering discipline. Minimum five years of directly related experience working in or in direct support of data center environments. Experience managing complex projects. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities This position reports to the unit manager of the University IT (UIT), Technical Facilities Department. This person will be a member of a team, which has the responsibility for the planning, management, construction and maintenance of UIT computing facilities and associated infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to: Two large computing facilities (approximately 25K square feet), eight geographically distributed Electronic Communications Hubs (approximately 18K square feet) and an Auxiliary Data Center located in Livermore, Ca. This position is directly responsible for the operational maintenance and construction of the building infrastructure and associated systems that directly support the University's highly specialized and mission critical computing facilities. These systems include, but are not limited to UPS and DC power systems, building security systems, power distribution systems, mechanical, plumbing and other systems commonly found in a data center environment. This position shall coordinate and oversee maintenance and construction activities necessary to maintain and/or upgrade the building infrastructure systems to ensure maximum uptime for internal and external customer equipment that resides in these facilities. This position shall coordinate and project manage work performed by vendors, contractors and University maintenance staff to ensure that work is clearly defined, method of procedure documents are developed and vetted with key stakeholders and that contractual and/or other obligations are met. This position will be required to develop and maintain accurate records that clearly identify system architecture, capacity levels, and maintenance and refresh cycle data. This position will be required to participate in decisions that could affect both short and long-range requirements concerning a project. This position shall participate in and respond to academic and administrative projects, including providing estimates, design, budgeting, project management, and subsequent maintenance of systems in accordance with SLAs etc. Take responsibility for planning and foresight on how to best utilize all UIT facilities. This would include but is not limited to evaluating and recommending changes to how facilities are built and configured, working with clients and members of UIT on the strategic distribution of equipment and services, determining how facilities are used in support of disaster preparedness and recovery and insuring adequate capacities and redundancies are provided for the assigned facilities. This position is responsible for participating in developing and implementing plans to support disaster preparedness and recovery, as well as maintaining building security plans and access procedures. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Stanford University policies and procedures and be able to assist other staff in problems that could arise both technically and administratively. Perform work duties in a self-directed and independent manner. Candidates are expected to have advanced technical knowledge directly related to the operation of complex mechanical, electrical and/or plumbing systems commonly found in computing environments. Candidates must have excellent project management skills and be able to demonstrate specific attention to detail. They must have the ability to use good judgment under pressure, convey information well in both written and oral form, and work in a team environment. Candidates must be highly self-motivated with strong technical analytic skills. They must have the ability to assess risk and evaluate alternatives to reduce risk.
