EH&S is the campus liaison with local, state and federal regulators. Within EH&S, the Environmental Public Health Group provides specialized services in all areas of public health protection and environmental health compliance.

Job Summary: Under the general direction of an Environmental Health and Safety Manager, or direction of the REHS Lead/Supervisor, the Staff REHS performs progressively complex professional environmental health activities involving coordination and implementation of the Campus Public Health Program to include, but not limited to investigation, inspection, data collection and analysis, enforcement action, report preparation and public contact; assists in environmental health program administration; and performs related duties as required. This position is part of the Public Health Group, and plans and performs routine and emergency environmental health inspections, investigations and provides technical expertise to assist food and pool facilities conform to all applicable environmental health laws, rules, and regulations. This position will plan and conduct inspections of food facilities (fixed, temporary, catering, food trucks, concession stands, etc.), recreational water, housing, and review construction drawing of food and pool facilities.
This position may collect water, food, and other specimens as needed for laboratory analysis and interpret the results of the subsequent analysis. The work week for full-time exempt employees is normally considered to be 40 hours; however, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to the position. This position will often require working on weekends and evenings to support UC Davis special events such as Picnic Day, Whole Earth Festival, Black Family Week, La Gran Tardeada, Pow Wow, Athletic events, catered events, etc., as well as provide inspection of remote locations such as the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory as well as provide support to designated reserve sites.
Physical Demands: Lift and move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
Climb ladders up to 10 feet or more in height.
Bend, walk and stoop in confined spaces. Walk on uneven surfaces. Frequently stand and walk; crawl through various areas on hands and knees; stand, walk or crouch on narrow and slippery surfaces;
Use of combustible gas meter, chlorine and PH spectrophotometer, and other applicable environmental monitoring and sampling devices.
Wear a respirator and other protective equipment, as necessary
Work Environment: Must possess Valid California Driver's License
Must possess a current/valid State of California Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) registration/licensure.
This position may at times require the employee to work with or be in an area where hazardous or radioactive materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Medical monitoring and surveillance may be required.
Must be able to work an occasional flexible schedule including nights and weekends, sometime on short notice, to meet business needs, e.g., to support campus special events involving food/catering, etc.
Work is usually performed in office, outdoor, and driving environments; some work is performed in varying temperatures and humidity; exposure to high levels of noise; some exposure to dust and odors; continuous contact with other staff and the public.

Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a current/valid State of California Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) registration/licensure.
Demonstrated experience in the environmental health field performing food and pool inspections.
Knowledge of Uniform Plumbing and Building Codes, National Electric Code and California Health and Safety Code, as they pertain to food facilities.
Skill to recognize, control and evaluate occupational and environmental health hazards including use of appropriate monitoring equipment.
Communication (oral, written, presentation, documentation) and interpersonal skills, to effectively interact with customers, convey technical information in lay terms, interpret and advise on regulations and laws, conduct training and educational programs, and develop detailed compliance reports and correspondence.
Demonstrated technical writing skills to develop detailed compliance reports, environmental assessment reports, procedures, interpret results of data and correspondence.
Skills to conduct and coordinate audits, investigations and evaluations and achieve necessary corrective action in a timely manner.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to food safety and occupational safety, environmental protection and health and public health.
Skill to use computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheet programs. _________________________________________
Preferred Qualifications: Review plans of new and remodeled pool construction and conduct pool construction inspections.
Knowledge and skill to conduct in-service training and educational programs within area of expertise.
Skill to interpret new regulations and determine their applicability to campus operations and devise strategies and procedures for compliance.
Skill to read and interpret drawings, specifications, technical journals and campus standards.
