Department: DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT - 064010 Department Description: The mission of Design and Construction Management is to deliver high quality buildings, create new environments, improve the infrastructure and transform existing facilities which will sustain and advance the campus' mission of learning, discovery and engagement. Incumbents are assigned project management responsibility for the largest scale and/or most complex projects. Projects managed by project managers at this level typically have budgets of $15 million to $100 million, individually or in aggregate, are funded from donor, campus and/or State funding, have prominent architectural significance on the campus, require Chancellor or Regents approval, involve the direction of multiple high level design and engineering professionals of multiple disciplines, require original needs assessment and use programming, and involve high technology and/or complex engineering.

Job Summary: Under general direction of the Director of Capital Projects, responsible for all project phases from inception and use programming, through design and contracting, to final completion of construction. Represent the campus throughout the process, including up to the Regents of the University of California. Direct the work of lower level project managers and/or other staff. Work independently and in teams and collaborate across campus. Maintain a respectful workplace, a proactive and positive attitude and superior customer service.
Physical Demands: Sit for extended periods of time.
Work Environment: Work occasional evenings and weekends to meet operational needs.
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License. Position will participate in the DMV Pull Notice System.

Minimum Qualifications: Current license as a professional architect in the United States.
Experience managing large architectural capital projects, including direct responsibility for the leadership of project teams and the development and management of overall project budgets and schedules.
Leadership and management skills to lead project committees and manage large and complex professional teams.
Knowledge of architectural, engineering and construction practices and sustainable design practices including LEED.
Experience directing the preparation of programming and design documents, reviewing and approving construction documents and contractor submittals and resolving field issues during construction.
Knowledge of current project and construction costs and experience with industry standard cost estimating systems.
Financial skills to prepare, monitor and manage detailed project budgets, evaluate independent cost estimates, and review and approve payment requests.
Knowledge of typical design and construction sequences and durations to prepare, monitor and manage detailed project schedules.
Construction administration experience to monitor contractor operations for conformance to contract documents and applicable codes, review and negotiate contractor claims, to oversee the work of inspectors and testing agencies and to actively assist project team in the resolution of technical and procedural challenges.
Experience with design and construction contracts, contract law and construction claims procedures. _______________________________________________
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with project scheduling software such as MS Project.
Familiarity with California and applicable building codes and regulations.
Oral communication skills to present project issues and design submittals to the campus leadership.
Written communication skills to prepare clear, concise and professional reports and correspondence.
Experience with spreadsheet software such as MS Excel.
Experience managing architectural capital projects in a university campus environment, including a wide range of typical campus building types such as research laboratories and facilities, classrooms, lecture halls, academic and administrative offices, student housing, food service facilities, recreational facilities, campus planning and infrastructure.
Experience with policies, procedures and practices specific to capital project administration for the University of California system.
Experience managing projects subject to the California state public contracting code.
