Department: CONTROLLED ENVIRON FACILITY - 061840 Department Description: The CEF (Controlled Environment Facility) is a central facility of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. It is a campus-wide facility available to all faculty and students on a recharge basis. The facility contains some 180 specialized controlled environment units and associated support infrastructure to allow users to culture biological materials under a wide range of reproducible (controlled) environmental conditions.

Job Summary: Under general supervision, performs maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of equipment and apparatus within the Controlled Environment Facility, including electrical and plumbing work, primarily on controlled environment units. The incumbent will share responsibility with the CEF Manager for on call during after-hours and weekends, to ensure response to operational malfunctions and emergency repairs.
Physical Demands: The incumbent must be able to work in tight spaces, bend, stoop, climb/work on ladders and scaffolding to heights up to 15'.
Position requires lifting up to 100 lbs.
Position requires, at times, working in close quarters, with solvents and various glues.
Work Environment: Work occasional overtime including weekends and holidays to meet operational needs.
Participate in rotating list for emergency call backs. Incumbent must be able to perform on call emergency services during after-hours, weekend and campus holidays.

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum two years training/experience working with/repairing electrical equipment and/or circuitry above 50 volts.
Electrical skill, experience and knowledge of electrical hazards and practicing safe electrical work practices and techniques.
Electrical experience to safely troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and install facility and growth chamber electrical components, such as solenoids, heaters, pumps, motors, proportional valves, lights, ballasts, etc.
Familiarity with 3 phase (wye & delta) power distribution.
Campus policy is a certification in electrical principals and should be able to qualify within 3 months of hire.
Plumbing experience in repairing, modifying, and/or designing facilities systems. Able to solder or braze copper pipe, glue plastic pipe, etc.
Experience using power tools, such as power drills, circular and reciprocating saws, drill press, bandsaw, etc.
Experience using a wide variety of hand tools, including but not limited to wrenches, pliers, screw drivers etc. for the repair and construction of facility equipment.
Experience with test equipment such as multimeters, CO2 monitors, temperature and humidity dataloggers, communication cable tester, light meters, etc.
Experience with computer systems as they pertain to the operation of Conviron growth chamber control systems.
Experience with computer programs, such as Excel and MS Word.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with lighting systems, including spectral quality, intensity effects, etc., as pertaining to growth chamber operation.
Working knowledge of the growth chamber alarm systems and how they interact with the campus alarm system.
Working knowledge of refrigeration systems as they pertain to the growth chambers sufficient to recognize problems on Freon-, glycol- and water-based cooling systems.
