Machine Shop Manager / Design and Fabrication Specialist
The Machine Shop Manager / Design and Fabrication Specialist is a resource to faculty and students by providing instructional, fabrication, and administrative services. This position works under minimal supervision and exercises discretion and independent judgment in assisting in the design and maintenance of laboratory equipment; designing, fabricating and assembling machined components; managing the machine shops; teaching safety and machine shop courses; and supervising student proctors in their duties in the student shops.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Design and manufacture equipment for instructional laboratories.
Design and manufacture equipment for faculty and student research.
Provide consultation and technical assistance in the design and construction of equipment for instructional laboratories, research, Clinic and other projects.
Organize and teach basic and intermediate safety and machine shop courses, including the preparation of class materials.
Provide ongoing training and re-training in the proper use of machinery as needed.
Supervise student proctors in their duties in student shops.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Ensure all shop environments are safe and comply with all applicable Federal, State and College regulations, policies, and laws.
Provide maintenance of machinery in all shops; and keep machine and equipment downtime to a minimum. Troubleshoot equipment for problems, make repairs and adjustments as needed, and coordinate repair needs and schedules with external vendors.
Oversee and give guidance in management of student shops.
Maintain inventory and records for necessary shop materials and supplies; ensure that the proper software, computing, tooling, equipment and materials are on hand when needed.
Maintain inventory of capital equipment in machine shops. Recommend new and replacement equipment.
Assist supervisor in preparing a budget; may control expenditures within established guidelines.
Assist with developing manufacturing bids and contracts.
Set priorities for work in consultation with the supervisor.
Stay knowledgeable about the latest equipment and machinery, software, tooling, and manufacturing and design methods.
Collaborate in establishing a new maker space facility at Harvey Mudd College
May perform special projects for Facilities and Maintenance.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: High school diploma and extensive courses beyond high school equivalent to one or two years of college or technical training; or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities of the position. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience: At least five years of machine shop experience; journeyman skill in the operation of all standard machine shop equipment; Familiarity with ISO requirements; supervisory experience and experience with developing manufacturing bids and contracts desirable.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individual must possess the knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in modern machine shops.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to repair machine shop equipment (old and modern); and when to contact external vendors for repairs.
Knowledge of safe work principles and practices.
Ability to train and orient student proctors and other machine shop users and provide ongoing training as needed.
Ability to read, speak, write and follow oral and written instructions in English.
Adept at using applicable computer software including CAD and CAM.
Ability to perform moderately complex arithmetic computations relating to design and manufacturing.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate and supervise in a culturally diverse environment.
Ability to safely lift fifty pounds, unassisted, to waist level.
Ability to properly use fire extinguishers.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, grasp hand tools, climb ladders up to 20 feet with assistance and ten feet unassisted; ability to work on feet for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to work productively with minimal supervisor consultation, make sound decisions and effectively prioritize multiple tasks in a logical progression.
Must be able and willing to work occasional weekends, evenings or holidays as needed.
Licenses: Valid California Driver License and a driving record, as maintained by the DMV, that is acceptable to the College’s insurance carrier.

Machining and Fabrication:
Adept at writing CNC programs for 4-axis mills, 2-axis lathes, and waterjet abrasive cutters.
In-depth knowledge of 3D Printing and laser cutting techniques, including maintaining the equipment.
Ability to operate, teach, and maintain various woodworking equipment, including a CNC 3-axis router.
Ability to design and fabricate complex jigs and fixtures for workholding.
Ability to TIG, MIG, and gas weld various materials.
Knowledge of plastic injection mold making and mold design.
Experienced in CNC surface grinding, including outside & inside grinding along with tool grinding, to tolerances of ±.0002” or better.
Experienced in hand lapping and honing techniques to tolerances of ±.0001” or better.
In-depth knowledge of the operation and programming of a wire EDM.
Ability to braze, soft solder, and silver solder various materials and mechanical components.
Strong mechanical design aptitude and desire to learn.
Practical knowledge and skill in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and specifying tolerances using ANSI B4.1-1967(R2009) standard limits and fits.
Ability to mathematically model mechanisms to determine resulting forces.
Knowledge of best practices for bearing and coupling placement.
Knowledge of mechatronics for designing automated apparatuses.
Experience implementing pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
Working knowledge of finite element analysis.
Familiarity with the 5S methodology and lean manufacturing.
Ability to apply strain gauges on various shaped components.
Ability to write tutorials for various shop equipment and part procedures.
Ability to write shop-related programs in suitable programming languages.
Experience with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio) and Google suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Apps Scripts).
Ability to edit and manage a Wiki site for student’s reference materials.

Hours: The regular hours of this position are 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, with a one hour unpaid meal period daily. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department, and specific times are negotiable.
