MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The candidate for the position of Plant Technician must meet the following qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree or vocational training in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc., or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Minimum of two years of experience in information technology or higher education.
Experience supporting large-scale network implementations and upgrades.
Experience with the installation of infrastructure cabling per industry standards and similar to USC standards.
Demonstrated experience implementing a new design of a large-scale network infrastructure.
Experience working on data center, network, or other enterprise wide technical consolidations.
Experience working in confined spaces in accordance with all safety protocols.
Proven experience splicing and testing indoor and outdoor fiber and copper.
Experience troubleshooting copper/fiber cables used in voice and data systems.
Experience reading floor plans and site plans.
Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, Visio) and Adobe, as well as fiber, copper, and network testing tools.
Experience developing network flow diagrams.
Good collaboration, communication, and technical documentation skills.
Valid California driver's license required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate for the position of Plant Technician has the following qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc.
More than four years of experience in information technology or higher education.
Experience delivering reliable and quality network service within a higher education environment.
THE WORK YOU WILL DO
The Plant Technician delivers and maintains network installations including the service, repair, and moderate upgrade of both inside-plant and outside-plant communication distribution systems. The Plant Technician organizes daily service calls, maintains customer relationships, solves problems, maintains documentation, and supports the relocation, repair, and installation of both indoor and outdoor cabling according to USC and industry standards. The Plant Technician provides basic troubleshooting and remediation of infrastructure voice and data equipment and services as well as innovative solutions to ensure that ITS meets both the current and future network service needs of a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders in administrative and academic units. As a member of ITS, the Plant Technician demonstrates ITS values in action.
The Plant Technician:
Creates and maintains documentation of all university communication equipment on the existing university plant management AutoCAD files, including underground utility fiber, copper splices, ducts, vaults, and building IDFs and MDFs. Consistently keeps customers informed of progress through timely written or verbal communications.
Performs system maintenance and administration of upgrades and changes to the environment by working closely with data and voice engineering teams, infrastructure engineering teams, vendors, and other service providers to minimize service disruptions and to facilitate new service installation.
Establishes constructive relationships with both internal and external customers to enhance process flow and problem resolution. Is responsive to customer needs and concerns to better identify pain points or issues.
Evaluates existing systems and equipment to determine if they require expansion or modification to meet the present and future telecommunications needs of the university or if a new telecommunications system is required.
Supports the day-to-day availability, performance, and operational integrity of network operations by managing network assets across campus. Supports day-to-day network field service operations, implementations, and upgrades, including DigAlerts and university cable service requests. Installs, tests, and repairs horizontal, riser, and underground fiber optic and copper cables across various university buildings and facilities.
Consistently makes sound and timely decisions that creates positive outcomes for customers and the organization. Relies on a mixture of analysis and experience even in the absence of complete information when resolving problems. Asks pertinent questions or leverages input from others for ideas on the best approach to addressing issues.
