The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a highly skilled Senior Marine Mechanician. Under general supervision, the incumbent will perform tasks in support of oceanographic projects. Perform senior level skills as a machinist operating all machines in the shop including ProtoTrak controlled mills.
Works from blueprints, rough sketches, written or verbal instructions. Operate heavy equipment including lifts and wire rope spooling winches. The incumbent must be familiar with the principles and operation of hydraulics. Develop, build, install and maintain mechanical equipment for scientific groups for use aboard ship and at shore laboratories.
Must be willing to go to sea for up to 30 days at a time.
Must be available to work overtime as needed, and travel overseas as required.
Graduation from High School and six (6) years of experience in machine shop work or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five (5) years of experience on both HAAS CNC mills and lathes. Knowledgeable in performing math (e.g. trigonometry) and calculations to operate CNC machines.
Five (5) years of experience using Master Cam programming software to program HAAS CNC machines.
Proven knowledge and experience of all machine shop equipment and processes, including: mills, lathes, grinding, cutting, horizontal boring, presses, brakes, rollers, shears, and CNC operations both turning and milling.
Demonstrated experience with Proto Trak mills and lathes.
Proven experience with laboratory machine shop equipment focusing on selection of materials, machine operations and safety procedures. Knowledge of safety practices and regulations and ability to follow safe working habits.
Thorough understanding of mechanical design, including structural, materials, corrosion, power transmission and hydraulics. Ability to design and fabricate shipboard/scientific equipment specified for research expeditions.
Proven experience with loads and stresses of various materials. Experience in documentation of laboratory tests including corrosion, fatigue, design analysis, product reliability and production quality control and efficiency.
Demonstrated ability to disassemble, renew and replace hydraulic hoses, "O" rings, and reassemble.
Demonstrated ability to recognize and distinguish wire sizes and spooling devices.
Proven knowledge of operational controls and capacity of overhead hoists, fork lifts, cable trucks and wire spoolers.
Skill to utilize available resources efficiently including electronic and mechanical test equipment, technical literature, heavy machinery, machine tools, hand tools, and transportation equipment.
Excellent computer skills including computer aided design, word processing, Cad Cam drafting.
Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, drafts and sketches.
Working knowledge of marine construction, and a familiarity with accepted maritime practices in workmanship and safety in order to comply with the certification requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and the ASME Code.
At-sea experience including the preparation, deployment, and recovery of deep sea oceanographic moorings. Experience in the mooring of large sea-going platforms. Sea-going skills involving rigging, deck safety, deck layout, stowing and securing gear, crane, A-frame and winch operations, ship handling.
Strong interpersonal communication skills with personnel at all levels. Ability to work on multiple projects and problem solving skills. Ability to organize, coordinate and delegate tasks to temporary personnel.
