Harbor Day School, a K-8 school in Corona del Mar, California, with 408 students, an annual budget of approximately $11 million and an endowment of approximately $20 million seeks a skilled and dedicated Director of Finance. Founded in 1952, Harbor Day School is currently undergoing a significant new building project with a ~$75 million capital budget.
The Director of Finance will report to the Head of School and sit on the 8-person administrative team. The Director of Finance supervises the Human Resources Manager and works closely with the Director of Facilities and several members of the Board of Trustees.
Lead day to day financial management of Harbor Day School
Develop, manage, and direct the operating budget. Report to the Head of School, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees on the results of the current budget and projections for future operations.
Organize and facilitate the Board of Trustees finance and audit committee meetings, support the compensation committee and as necessary, attend Board of Trustee meetings
Manage the tuition collection and financial aid process.
Oversee annual reporting to accrediting and member bodies (CAIS, NAIS, WASC, Cal-ISBOA) and maintain compliance with all government regulations.
Manage and direct all functions of the business office, including but not limited to payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, accounting, and food service program.
Safeguard the school’s assets through establishing and maintaining strong and appropriate internal controls and procedures.
Oversee risk management through the purchase of appropriate insurance policies, including property, casualty, liability, D & O, workers compensation, cyber security, and others as agreed upon by the Board of Trustees. Maintain a good relationship with the appropriate insurance brokers.
Select or approve and directly oversee relationships with business service providers, including auditors, banks, attorneys, insurance brokers and providers, investment managers, food service providers, contractors, and consultants.
Oversee the human resource functions and implementation of benefits and compensation, employee relations, and employee safety.
Work closely with the Director of Facilities in supporting the maintenance of school properties.
Work closely with the Director of Development in receiving philanthropic gifts.
Effectively supervise and mentor key staff.
Serve as a visible community leader working with parents, teachers, school leadership, and Trustees to implement the mission and vision of the school.
Lead long term financial and strategic management of Harbor Day School
Establish a financial modeling system for strategic planning to aid the administration and Board of Trustees in making strategic decisions.
Support the Trustees and all efforts of the Harbor Day Endowment Corporation.
Serve on the committee (consisting of Trustees and the Head of School) that oversees the school’s 403b and other retirement plans. Act as the point person in the school’s relationship with the plan consultant and administrator.
Provide financial information and planning that builds trust among all constituencies, including potential donors.
Oversee the financial aspects of the School’s $75 million+ capital project, including managing the relationship with the School’s lender and other stakeholders.

Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or CPA preferred.
7+ years of financial and business leadership; independent school experience preferred.
Experienced strategic thinker who can take Harbor Day School into the future.
Demonstrated experience in financial planning, modeling, and analysis, including cost drivers, competitive analysis, market analysis, etc.
Experience managing the financial aspects of a major construction project.
Experience developing long-range capital and operational budget planning.
Solid experience and proficiency in working with a variety of databases.
Ability to lead strategic initiatives to completion while anticipating issues and identifying effective solutions across the school.
Relevant computer proficiency, including database and spreadsheet experience. Experience with Blackbaud and other school-centric systems and databases preferred.
Experience in human resource management, employee benefits and payroll procedures.
Demonstrated experience in measuring and improving organization-wide productivity.
Effective collaboration skills, consistent meaningful contribution to senior leadership teams, and a sense of humor and ability to exhibit patience in a group.
Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills, including the ability to distill complex topics and then communicate them effectively to constituents with varied levels of financial knowledge and sophistication.
