The Central Sierra Snow Lab (CSSL) is an off-campus research facility located in the Donner Summit region in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California (3919'N, 12022'W). This location is near Soda Springs, about 25 km northwest of Lake Tahoe. It is one of the nation's principal observatories of hydrological and meteorological phenomena in a mountain environment. The CSSL was established in 1946 by the US Army Corps of Engineers and Weather Bureau; was managed by the U.S. Forest service from 1954 to 1995; and has been managed by the University of California, Berkeley since 1996 through an MOU with the USDA Forest Service. Hence, the building and property belong to the USDA, and the instrumentation and equipment belong to UC Berkeley and various research agencies. The facility's major function is hydrological research and features a heavily-instrumented field site and associated technical expertise to support PIs from various research entities, such as the University of California, Department of Water Resources, National Weather Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Western Regional Climate Center, and USDA Forest Service. This job also entails management of research and long-term instrumentation at the Onion Creek Experimental Forest. Research projects at CSSL have included: modeling black carbon's role as an albedo-changing precipitate and snow surface impurity; studying the isotopic evolution of the snowpack; measuring the attenuation of cosmic gamma radiation to assess snowpack snow water equivalent; the operational utility of weather forecasts; using LiDAR to measure snowpack spatial and temporal distribution; trends in Sierra Nevada climatology and snowpack during the past six decades; modeling ground and surface water response to snow accumulation and ablation; modeling air temperature lapse rate; fluidless precipitation gauge development; snow surveys; and avalanche safety and forecasting.
Under minimal supervision, performs field and experimental work that requires technical knowledge of hydrological equipment and skill in collecting (physical) and analyzing (mental) hydrological samples. Performs deep snow pit profiles including depth, density, snow water equivalent, temperature, free water, ion concentration, dielectric constant, crystal/grain size/ type. Performs imaging of ice lenses, flow fingers, micro/macro pores. Does programming of data loggers. Performs wet chemistry - pH, conductivity, and alkalinity. Prepares and carries out water quality monitoring, collection, analysis and interpretation of data. Tasks involve different and unrelated processes and methods. The work requires familiarity and judgment in selecting appropriate alternatives from among a number of standard hydrological principles, methods and practices. Inventories, analyzes, and interprets various hydrologic factors and conditions to determine interrelationships, deviations, and their relationship to forest resource management. Makes innovative contributions to research procedures, and often times the freedom to implement his/her own procedures. Performs a variety of studies depending on the research. Performs statistical analyses of data. Prepares technical reports, publications and presentations. Writes proposals for funding. Responsible for hydrometeorological instrumentation fabrication, siting, installation, and maintenance for equipment such as: radiometers, thermocouples, anemometers, precipitation gauges, stream flow gauges, hygrothermographs, cosmic ray sensors, acoustic distance gauges, infrared thermometers, meltpan arrays, tipping buckets, wet/dry deposition sampler, soil tensiometers, snow pillows, and pressure transducers. Interviews, trains and supervises employees needed for research projects
Schedules and coordinates research activities on site and within buildings; coordinates and conducts necessary maintenance of facilities and equipment; handles all purchasing for research activities and office; negotiates contracts for various construction; and maintains and administers petty cash.
Supports university and K-12 field trips and public education programs.
Coordinates Snow Lab website and social media accounts.
Develops and implements field and lab safety procedures and protocols and ensures that they are followed by station users. During the non-peak season (June - September), provides at least 20 days of operational support to the Sagehen Creek Field Station.
Collaborative research support.
Participates as a member of interdisciplinary team working on hydrometeorologic projects.
Undertakes research projects in collaboration with academic and other investigators, who work mainly at their home locations.
Researchers depend on incumbent to perform the initial data collections and to ensure that results are accurate and dependable - work efforts directly affect researchers' results.
Must be able to exercise independent judgment in making minor deviations from guidelines in order to adapt them to specific research projects or other needs.
Performs surveys of areas following disturbance of resources, and makes recommendations on restoration projects being considered for implementation.
As the resident expert of the local wilderness area, also may provide assistance in search and rescue operations as needed by the local authorities.

Must be able to ski or snow shoe, since incumbent is responsible for data collection and equipment maintenance throughout the year (typically travels up to 20 miles/day over the snow during research projects).
Ability to deal with heavy snow conditions during winter, including extensive snow shoveling, snow removal from roofs, and operation of snowcats and snow blowers.
Must be able to work in a varied environment -- performing both office and field work which includes hiking over rough, uneven ground, wading in streams, traversing snow fields and working in inclement weather
Ability to drive a truck and 4-wheeler, to operate power tools, and to work safely in wood and metal working shops.
Ability to climb tall towers for instrument installation, maintenance, and removal.
Ability to support Sagehen Creek Field Station operations during the Snow Lab's non-peak season.
Ability to facilitate and collaborate with a diverse group of constituencies on long- and short-term property operations planning and fundraising.
Near daily physical work required from November through May, except for brief intervals on UC business, or on authorized days off and vacation periods.
Must know professional concepts and methods of hydrology with sufficient knowledge of standard practices to perform a variety of hydrological projects.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Avalanche, winter backcountry guiding.
Tower climbing training.
Environmental Health and Safety trainings.
First aid, CPR and relevant survival skills.
Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training preferred.
