Dept Marketing Statement The Director of the Seymour Marine Discovery Center (SMDC) provides visionary leadership, fundraising strategy and solicitation, contemporary management skills, and creativity. The Director collaborates with the Physical and Biological Division, Board of Directors of the Friends of Seymour Marine Discovery Center, UCSC faculty and researchers, SMDC staff, University Relations, and community stakeholders to shape the organization's long-term success. The Director oversees all aspects of the organization including development strategy, board and volunteer relations, strategic planning, staff leadership and management, and business operations, including financial management and human resources.
The Seymour Marine Discovery Center (SMDC) serves as an outreach and public education component of the Physical and Biological Sciences division at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC). UCSC is committed to serving a student body and hiring faculty and staff who reflect the diversity of the State of California; responding to the needs of a diverse society; and to maintaining principles of equity and inclusion.
The SMDC is charged with educating people of all ages about marine science research and ocean conservation. Its overarching goal is to instill in its visitors a deep and lasting appreciation of the role research plays in understanding and protecting the world's oceans.
The SMDC consists of a 17,500-square-foot facility with additional outdoor features on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean located on the UC Santa Cruz Coastal Campus. Its exhibits focus on research conducted by scientists at UC Santa Cruz. In FY19, the Seymour Center had approximately 65,000 visitors, including nearly 9,000 students, teachers, and adult chaperones from transitional kindergarten through community college participating in educational programs grounded in the Next Generation Science Standards. In FY19, the center's operating budget was $1.4 million with a staff of almost 20 FTEs and 250 active volunteers.

Job Duties 40% - Fundraising, Financial Leadership and Resource Stewardship:
Raise core funds in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner, including implementation of capital campaigns, major donor cultivation and events, annual drives, and new funding raising initiatives. Manage and allocate budgetary, personnel, and physical resources to further the Center's vision. Develop large scale partnerships, projects, and initiatives to engage the community and bring additional resources into the Center.
20% - Strategic Planning & Strategic Implementation for the Center:
Lead strategic discussions regarding the Center's mission. Identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. Develop strategies to address weaknesses. Establish quantitative and qualitative metrics to monitor progress towards goals. Continually ensure that research, data and evaluation findings are effectively used to inform decision-making. Anticipate future needs, challenges and opportunities, and use strategic and innovation approaches to ensure the long-term health of the Center.
10% - Staff Supervision and Management of Personnel:
Develop staffing structure, write job descriptions, recruit, hire, train, manage workflow, and provide performance evaluations for professional, technical, and administrative support staff. Provide direction and leadership to instill a sense of teamwork and commitment in all staff to ensure delivery of mission-driven education efforts and ongoing operations with the highest quality of customer service. Indirectly oversee 20-30 university student employees working part time year-round.
10% - Grant writing:
Author and contribute to grants and other fundraising documents to support Center operations and programmatic goals.
5% - Museum and Educational Programming:
Examine the use of appropriate technology in exhibits and programming. Deepen and enhance learning and engagement. Oversee a portfolio of innovation activities: develop a pipeline of projects and launch initiatives and pilot projects to help drive the Center's long-term strategic goals. Develop and carry out marketing plans. Resolve problems relating to the health and exhibition of living organisms in the Center's aquariums.
5% - Operations & Facilities Management:
Oversee 17,500-sq-ft of exhibit, aquarium, event, and outdoor space. Anticipate and plan for future growth, program development, trends, and change. Oversee the acquisition, construction, and renovation of all Center space, outdoor exhibits, teaching areas, and associated spaces. Manage safety protocols for all staff, volunteers, students, and visitors.
5% - Principal External Spokesperson & Community Relations:
Represent the Center at public, professional, development, media, and social functions. Build partnerships locally and nationally with agencies and institutions having common interests. Widely disseminate learnings on multiple platforms to both internal and external audiences, including but not limited to presentations, conferences, peer-reviewed journals, white papers, blogs, and newsletters.
5% - Board-Related Duties & Responsibilities:
Work closely with the Friends of the Seymour Marine Discovery Center board of directors. Serve as liaison to executive and other committees, and direct the coordination of all board activities, including bylaws, board recruitment, committee structure and annual goals, board meetings and special events, and ongoing work.
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience and training.
Field specific knowledge: Thorough knowledge of museum education field, industry standards, technologies and current trends, and ability to apply knowledge to staff development, strategic planning, and large scale operational and management practices.
Supervision and Management of Staff: Demonstrated experience managing a team of direct and indirect reports. Experience supervising professional staff with extensive technical expertise.
Leadership: Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage a public, a self-supporting, mission-based museum.
Ability to move from dialogue to decision making and translate SMDC's vision into pragmatic and operational reality.
Fiscal Management: Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated skills in budgeting, analyzing financial data, running projections based on local and industry trends and creating financial reports for a variety of audiences.
Fundraising: Excellent fundraising and donor cultivation and grant writing skills.
Successful experience leading capital campaigns (initiative development, planning, donor cultivation, marketing, etc.), and proven record as an effective fundraiser.
Program Management & Planning: Excellent program management and coordination skills, including short- and long-range planning.
Ability to work autonomously to coordinate complex educational processes, systems, and resources.
Relationship building & Communication: Ability to seek out alliances and partnerships in the museum, science, and education sectors to enhance relationships with local universities, communities, and government leaders.
Record of success developing and working with a Board of Advisors and/or Fundraising Boards.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and productively with professional staff and faculty to foster a positive and cooperative work environment, and enhance the Center's profile on- and off-campus.
Strategic planning: Thorough knowledge of and skill in developing and implementing a strategic plan within the museum education sector or similar field. Ability to act as a dynamic and visionary leader who can build upon the organization's successes with a vision for the future.
Minimum of 4-6 years management or directorship experience in the museum education field coordinating programmatic operations (design, implementation, evaluation), supervising and evaluating staff and volunteers, and managing programmatic projects (schedules, budgets, resources).
