![]() Assistant Project Scientist 2021 (Al-Bassam Lab) The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for one Assistant Project Scientist in biochemistry and Structural biology. POSITION DESCRIPTION: The position will focus on the functional and structural characterization of molecular assemblies that promote biogenesis and polymerization tubulin dimers into microtubules and mechanisms of mitotic kinesin motor proteins. The candidate will design and perform experiments using molecular biology, protein expression, protein biochemistry techniques and cryo-EM. This position requires strong molecular biology, protein biochemistry and structural biology skills to successfully execute these experiments. Candidates are preferred to have demonstrated success in using structural biology approaches such as cryo-EM and/or x-ray crystallography. The candidate will then summarize data and assist with the preparation of figures and writing of manuscripts for publication, as well as assist in writing and reviewing grant proposals. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, responsible individual with strong interpersonal, communication and time-management skills who works well both independently and as part of a team. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: PhD and relevant postdoctoral training in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, structural biology or a related field with laboratory research experience reconstituting protein complexes in vitro. Must have experience with structural biology (either X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM and single particle image analysis) and be experienced with general cloning, biochemistry and protein purification. Must be able to keep a detailed laboratory notebook of experiments and procedures and data for publications, proposals, and/or presentations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Scientific training and skill equivalent to graduate work in structural biology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Expertise in x-ray crystallographic structure determination and/or cryo-electron microscopy and single particle image methods Experience with molecular biology techniques including transformations, DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, site-directed mutagenesis and DNA sequence analysis. Experience with protein construct design and optimization for structural studies. Experience with record keeping and data storage. Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Word and Excel. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with protein-protein interaction studies. Experience with mammalian and/or insect cell culture protein expression. Experience writing and editing manuscripts. SALARY RANGE: Step I-VI $63,100-$81,200 [100% annual], commensurate with qualifications and experience TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Appointments may be made up to 100%.
